Malonish are you a current undergrad? It was a baritone player i believe. Also a trombone player was [deleted]. He didn't say it to me, he said it to the entire first 3 rows of the student section. I don't know why this is something I would lie about.

Honestly the thing that was upsetting me the most was the bands lack of participating in cheers with us. They weren't doing anything else. Might as well chant defense with us.

Oh and Malonish if you want to discuss this more come find me at the game tonight. I will be there in the student section (if there is one) with a red smu blvd polo.

EDIT- This would be the case for why the band members reacted the way they did. Most of our section was being drunk and rowdy. I am sure that this annoyed some of the band members and they may have reacted to that. I don't think that is a fair reaction, but I can see how that could have brought about that reaction.

There was a time when at a basketball game you would assume the band was the drunk and rowdy group. I guess those days are gone.

Okay, time to put some myths about Friday night to rest. Keep in mind that i am a CURRENT member of the band who was at the game Friday night.

1) Yes, we were late, but this was not our fault. Everyone gathered at the band hall at around 5 in order to leave at 5:15 to get to the AAC in time for the pep rally at 6, and then play at the game. However, the bus that was chartered by the athletic department did not arrive to pick us up until approximately 6. Therefore, we were late.

2) About the guy saying we told the SMU section to be quiet: We did no such thing. You have twisted what we actually said. Some of us in the low brass in the back row were growing weary of the people directly behind us in the SMU section throwing obscene, crude, and derogatory comments toward the TCU players. They said some very shameful things, and frankly, we were embarrassed by their behavior. So, after a while we turned around and told them to tone down the insults towards TCU and display some sportsmanship. We are here representing SMU for crying out loud. We told you guys to stop with the obscenity and actually support our team; we did not tell you to shut up. Yelling obscenities at the other team does not support OUR team. It's just vulgar and inappropriate.

3) About the cheers: I think we could all stand to be more in sync when it comes to the cheers...sometimes it was the band doing cheers, sometimes just the cheerleaders, and sometimes just the students. But WE DID cheer. The band is always there for our teams, through the good and the bad. We always cheer. There's a reason we're called The Hub of SMU Spirit.

4) We were seated where we were told to sit. We had no control over this. Sorry if you didn't like sitting behind us, but there's nothing we could do.

We are all on the same team here. Why not act like it? Keep on coming out to the games like you did Friday night and help cheer the Mustangs on to victory! Let's work together here.

Seriously? Our student section is finally being rowdy and talking trash and you didn't like their potty mouths so you told them to stop?

Back in the day the band would be leading the charge on potty mouth chants. Most of them were invented by the band. I think you need to get with the program. With beer sales in Moody this is only going to be more the norm - so you may want steel yourselves for some (gasp) bad words.

Whatever they were saying about TCU was probably true.

Thanks for the info. We are going to be on national TV pretty soon and we don't want to come across as classless trash. But we do want to be loud. Does the band wave their hand or instruments while the other team is shooting free throws on that end? I don't know whether they do or do not but I did notice the TCU band and Baylor band were doing that.

I did all the time. A shiny trombone may be distracting. This was when we were directly behind the basket and in direct sight line. No idea how it will be in the future. Maybe I should go to game and find out :D

It really depends on what it was. If you're calling their cheerleaders b-tches and hoes then maybe dial that back. If you're just going F*** you F*** you F*** you F*** you F*** you F*** you, then maybe not. (While it may be earned by TCU, we should play nice in public) The stuff that the band yells attempts to be clever over rude.

Example: Playing ECU my freshman brother got the player to give a WTF look over at us because he yelled "WHAT'S THE CAPITOL OF EAST CAROLINA?" Then she missed.

My offer holds for you too theR3DandtheBLU3. Come find me during the game when you aren't playing and we can talk about this. I agree we should be working together.

Prior to the band arriving the TCU mascot was in the stands at our end visiting and an SMU student on about the first row (which is about where the band would have been sitting kept giving the Mascot the bird (they were seperated by about 6 feet) until a security guard came u ad told the student to cut it out. Very rude of our student I thought as everyone at our end of the court could see what he was doing.

Also agree the music of our band, for the most part, was not very good. At one time they played a piece so slow the cheerleaders couldn't dance to it.
