This might have to do with athletcis actually - better exposure (Big 12 / Rose Bowl) leads to more applications which in turn leads to more selective admissions and better overall students.

I hate when people say "it is a school first" - athletics are the front porch of every university. Better athletic programs actually lead to better academic rankings. Some people just don't get it.

If it were me, I'd let some athletes slide so that we can actually make up the difference with better applicants. Everybody wins!

We don't need this to fall into a academic discussion - but Lebanese you are just wrong - SMU has not been falling in the rankings - quite the opposite. And TCU's business school is not ranked above us by almost any measure. Lets not get hysterical. We are well above ever private school peer except for Rice - who is in a class by themselves academically, but has traded everything to get there - including anything fun.

Are we slipping? I do know that we're ranked 60 and TCU is 82 in the "national university" ranking (U.S. News and World Report).
