Promise Fulfilled

Postby Stallion » Mon Dec 30, 2013 11:42 pm

4 of 6 SMU Basketball players that have declared majors according to the smumustangs.com Roster player profiles are in the College of Education and Human Development-the other 2 are pursuing masters degrees at SMU

I'd like to point out this school was created after the hiring of June Jones and fulfills the often stated promise that SMU would create new areas of study that would be of interest to student athletes.

BTW I've personally cited and identified about 17-18 SMU players in FB and BB who have majored in this School since its opening. I'm sure I've barely scratched the surface. Football roster doesn't list major. Plus this school is rapidly expanding its faculty and course opportunities. Its probably pretty damn hard to build a new School from scratch-some patience should be exercised in allowing SMU to expand this alternative

here's the Time Line-significantly, the endowment gift by the Simmons was being completed about the time Orsini was organizing the Circle of Champions and preparing to negotiate with June Jones in late 2007. December 2008 an undergraduate degree was approved by Board of Trustees-. Applied Physiology and Sports Management. 2010 the facilty donated by the Simmons opened up. SMU has had various forms of an Education graduate degree for awhile but it wasn't until the Simmons gift that it became one of the recognized Schools of the University and part of the undergraduate alternative.

So why aren't student athlete interested in business or engineering? I'm confused.

But the Physiology and Sports Mgmt degrees are significant additions and likely not added without pressure from coaches. Before if you wanted Physiology you had to take courses at UTA and transfer them, I believe.

Schools don't want to call their programs Physical Education so the dress it and call it by a more scholarly name like Kinesiology or Applied Physiology or Nutrition or Wellness. There are schools all over the country that include numerous combinations of these descriptive titles. Its the study of living organism including humans and how they function in practice. See the Speed in running study recently highlited by PBS or Mark Cuban's donation to study "flopping" in Basketball- Good examples

Right, but SMU had none of those prior to above. So, thanks to the Simmons and June.

Actually, this is another example of SMU addressing the problem BEFORE June was hired and as part of the negotiating package offered to June Jones prior to his arrival. He gets way to much credit for this stuff. The Ball was moved downfield by SMU alumni who were tired of getting their [deleted] kicked for decades. As far as admissions(Category C) and curriculum June kicked the x-tra point. We have the published evidence. Don't know why more people can't see what is quite clear from all the availiable evidence. June Jones was offered a very definite strategic plan that SMU was implementing to allow SMU to compete on an even academic playing field from Day 1.

Because a lot of athletes want to be coaches. Some are interested in business or engineering but some are not. Not everyone wants to be limited to just business or engineering.
