Re: Bobby Burton-247.com: UT to Hire Charlie StrongLooks like I got something right for once...
Re: Bobby Burton-247.com: UT to Hire Charlie StrongIf so Kevin Sumlin's recruiting dominance might be challenged. I thought Franklin would get it. Now with Strong you might have 2 young African American coaches that can really coach in a heavyweight slug fest for recruits in Texas. And Strong can also cherry pick Florida. This will be a flat out war now. I wonder if SMU would ever consider going that route.

Re: Bobby Burton-247.com: UT to Hire Charlie StrongI can't believe they didn't hire the best recruiter of Texas talent in the state:
Why June Jones, OF COURSE!
Re: Bobby Burton-247.com: UT to Hire Charlie Strong
I agree about Strong and the recruiting angle. I like Mack as a person but I thought as a Texas-naysayer he would keep them at Holiday Bowl mediocrity - a new younger aggressive coach will help them. Never really thought Franklin was the guy.
Re: Bobby Burton-247.com: UT to Hire Charlie StrongAs a Florida fan, I am pissed he took the UT job. Was hoping he would be around next year after Muschamp got canned.

Re: Bobby Burton-247.com: UT to Hire Charlie StrongI'm glad they didn't get Franklin, if this story is true. Strong is good, but without concrete evidence, Franklin just seems to be better, so I'm glad Franklin isn't headed to Austin.
Re: Bobby Burton-247.com: UT to Hire Charlie StrongMy Vandy friends think that Franklin is headed to Penn State.
Re: Bobby Burton-247.com: UT to Hire Charlie StrongDefinitely the best hire they could have made from 2nd tier candidates. Continues their trend of hiring up and comers from basketball schools.
They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security

Re: Bobby Burton-247.com: UT to Hire Charlie StrongIf he was white they would have never even thought about him from that school with that record. There is an idea that the great African American players want to play for AA coaches. Will be interesting to see what happens.
Re: Bobby Burton-247.com: UT to Hire Charlie Strong
I sure hope it was because they thought he was the best candidate remaining, not because of his race. Do the elite college football players really care what race their coach is? I would guess 95% don't. They just want to play for a coach and a school that prepares them best for Sundays. IMHO, Strong was the best remaining option based on merit, not race. Re: Bobby Burton-247.com: UT to Hire Charlie Strongi think AA head coaches generally have a higher percentage of AA assistant coaches, and those coaches have better luck recruiting AA players. So yeah, i think that is part of the strategy here, and i would expect you will much more of it in the next two or three years. Not saying good or bad, but the trend is definitely expanding.
Bobby Burton-247.com: UT to Hire Charlie StrongOh, how the mighty have fallen. I think (and have heard from Whorens), Strong was like 6 or 7 on their target list. Still, over all a good hire. We'll see if he can navigate their fantasy entitlement culture.
Re: Bobby Burton-247.com: UT to Hire Charlie StrongThe fact is that Charlie Strong built a fantastic resume working for 25 years as an assistant for some of the Top programs in the Country mostly the South. He should have been a head coach about 5-6 years before he was given a shot. Once he did get a shot-he knocked it out of the park. He earned a job like this and has a better resume than most coaches that have even gotten a shot at National programs. Bob Stoops, Darrell Royal, Tom Osborne, Barry Switzer, Jimmie Johnson, Sumlin, Joe Paterno, Will Muschamp, etc etc-his resume is outstanding
