The thing is though that the 30mm was likely contingent on minimum numbers of inventory that you need more than 8 teams for.

Ecu brings a better budget, fan following, facilities, and program than most if not all of the remaining CUSA or MAC options. The Mwc isn't an option after the BSU/SDSU fallout.

Short of Boise or SDSU which already fell through, who you gonna take instead?

First off you didn't answer the question, who else do you take that the league can get? BYU or the MWC aren't coming.

The goal should be to move up to the Big 12 with you guys...

Who says it isn't the goal? I don't think anyone associated with SMU thought this was the ultimate destination for SMU, merely the best available one right now.
this conference (American) was doomed from the beginning (G5 status, 135 Million contract instead if 1.35billion, no automatic bid, no representation in CFP selection committee, more than 1/2 of its members want to leave and 4/5 don't feel like this conference suits them..)

The Big 12 isn't inviting anyone right now, so what can your admin do RIGHT NOW to please you? Surely you don't think staying in CUSA was the better move???

Also, the only reason we wanted to join the Big East was because of the increased TV exposure and revenues that exceeded $10 million a year. None of those happened since we are still only shown on ESPNU and ESPN3 and make less than $3 million in revenue.

Exposure went up. You went from a league with 13 games on FS1 to a league with 17 games on ESPN or ESPN2 with another 12 on ESPNU or ESPN News which are more widely distributed than your old league's non-FS1 options are. To maximize this though you need to win more as the top 4 teams in league play (UCF, UL, Rutgers, UH) scooped up 58% of the appearances on ESPN or ESPN2.

Travel alone is going to cripple us. (Flying out to UConn for basketball and football as well as non revenue sports can get pretty expensive!)

Marshall, Old Dominion, and Charlotte aren't exactly around the corner.

Obviously this league isn't ideal but what better option was available?

I'm convinced FTH learned everything he knows about Football playing Madden on XBOX. Unfortunate for us.

BU, FTHP is literally Cougar King, but just trolling us under that name. He also goes by StandUp on the bball board.

Don't feed him and just ignore him.

We all hate him and have no idea why the mods haven't banned this completely obvious troll

Dunno why FTH is bashing ECU.

They are a pretty good program with good following in a large southern state.

If any school deserves to be questioned its Tulsa. Notwithstanding their success in CUSA football, at the end of the day its still a very small private school with little hope of growing much more of a fan base in a state with a low population. They are essentially Rice (which is at least in Houston) but in Oklahoma.

Honestly, I think schools like UMass, Texas State, and UTSA would have been better long term adds simply b/c of the size of the schools and potential to grow fan bases. Hell, UMass would at least help by giving UConn a travel partner and potential nearby rival basketball school.

yeah I'm sure we blackballed Texas St, NTSU and UTSA. UMASS would be a ridiculous addition. You want to study up on their Football program and facilities a little. Tulsa has done fine in both Football and Basketball-certainly better than SMU*. Really no call to bash that program basrd on one bad year

I'm not bashing Tulsa off a bad season.

I'm bashing them b/c they are a TINY private school in a state with a low population. They have almost long term no growth potential with their fan base. They only have about 3,200 undergrads.

At least SMU and Tulane have fertile recruiting grounds as a good reason to have them. Tulsa has...

I mention UMass b/c if the AAC wants to keep UConn they are going to have to eventually get them a travel partner in addition to Temple for sports other than football. UMass makes the most sense out of what's left in that area. I know their stadium is very tiny and that they play several games at Gillette Stadium to make up for it. Again, I'm looking long term with the assumption an invite to another conference is not coming. Under that assumption the best thing to do is to grow the AAC's worth from within. UMass is a school you can do that with since its a large state school. For all their past success, Tulsa pretty much can't. Unfortunately, the construction of the conference seems like wasn't done with much thought to what could be 10-15 years from now and instead was a grab bag game.

I know they aren't as good a program with as large a following as Tulsa right this second. But they have good growth potential while Tulsa is pretty much maxed out.

Agree the American is a better option than CUSA, and we do get better exposure. We just know that it is where we are for now and it isn't "home" (Big 12)
