From today's Memphis Commercial Appeal

"Applications for enrollment in the University of Memphis have surged 68 percent, a college official said Tuesday.

One reason: Joining the American Athletic Conference spurred interest in U of M among out-of-state high school students, interim U of M president R. Brad Martin said."

That's a pretty compelling argument for sports' role in enhancing a university's reputation. And, for the value of the conference's ESPN contract.

(Posted this in basketball because U of M's football program is less successful that SMU's, so the credit has to go to b-ball.)
