Maybe they're waiting for a full house/sell out against a nationally prominent team where they can honor him at halftime in front of a packed house. Oh wait...

Have you actually been inside what I like to call the "laundromat?" They hang all sorts of crap from their rafters. I think there are banners for ACC tournament quarterfinalist in years where all that meant was they didn't have to do the play in game (aka Les Robsinson classic). Seriously, they hang all sorts of numbers there, some formally "retired" and unusable by future players, and some that are just honored, but hanging up nonetheless.

Google it an you'll see what I mean.

mustangxc. No disrespect but I am not sure why you are asking that question. Since I.T. did not play in the ACC you can not compare the two. If you have not done so, in an earlier post of mine, I have a link to an article that will give you good insight to what type of a player he was and how he dominated during his playing days. When you compare him to the great players that played for SMU, there is no question he deserves to have his number retired. IMO, I would say he is the second greatest SMU basketball player behind Jim Krebs.

I never saw him play but even I know the man should have his number retired. He was an amazing player for SMU.

No they will not. And we will never retire Michael Jordan's number either.

No disrespect, but just because you are a really good player at SMU should not mean that you should have your jersey number retired. That honor should be held for the elite of the elite. Happy to hear that he was one of the best to play at SMU. Highly doubt that he would have been on the same level as players at other programs of his time that also had their jersey's retired. I could be wrong. Other programs like UNC, Duke, Kansas, Indiana, UCLA definitely do not retire player jersey because they are loyal fans and ambassadors of the game. Maybe some other form of special recognition is deserved (maybe at halftime of a game), just don't see his jersey being retired. Let's have higher standards on the court for that achievement.

Why do you think Koncak's number got retired you jerk? Why did the womens hoops team retired Karlin Kennedy's number you jerk? Or Cash Birdwell?

I have seen Mr. Terrell walk into a middle school, and the kids flock to him. In part, word traveled quickly he was an NBA player, but I.T. didn't hesitate to set the record straight that he was an SMU Mustang. Usually he has on an SMU shirt. What a great example for young people. What a great ambassador for SMU! He deserves recognition for his BBall career at SMU and his continued support.
It makes sense to me.

Feel the love. Did I read correctly that IT graduated in Class of '76. Are you trying to tell me that SMU would take 37 years to try and decide if someone should get their jersey retired. Really? You bring up the subject now because we are relevant in Basketball again, understood. Look at other basketball programs. Do other basketball programs retire jerseys 37 years later? Really? I didn't think so. If you do not believe me, ok then, ask Coach Brown if that is common practice.

LA Mustang, as much as I want to respect you and your opinion, your "better than you" attitude has grown tiresome. You criticize my posts and then make a similar post on the same topic the following week. Let's talk more about our Home Winning Streak that I mentioned 2 weeks ago, wasn't a big deal to you then. Next thing you know, we win another game and you are talking about our Home Winning Streak in a new post. Grow up. Put your big boy pants on. You know a lot, but you don't know everything and it is ok if you are a little late to the party every now and then. I won't hold it against you.

The subject of retiring his jersey has come up during every season for many, many years. An SMU fan would know that.

We just retired Don Merideth's jersey a few years ago, many more than 37 from him leaving SMU. An SMU fan would know that.

I will never understand why there is so much hate on this board. Pure hate. Especially towards fellow SMU Alums. We don't even know each other. Can't we all just express our opinions and if you don't agree, then maybe we just agree to disagree. If you don't agree with my opinion, then ok, no big deal, you do not have to make an attempt to belittle me to make yourself feel better. I know that I do not get anything out of it. Why waist your time? You can ignore my post. You don't have to reply to my posts? I promise not to lose any sleep. Who really wants to read all the 1st grade comments and childish accusations? Can't we raise the bar?
