Baylor Band Tactics Legal?

Is it legal for the Baylor Band to play super loud right up until SMU snaps the ball so the wide receivers cant hear the signals?

One time in the 2nd half the Baylor Band kept playing right through the snap and the refs still did not throw a flag?

well I'm glad someone else was paying attention. As soon as the other team comes to the line of scrimmage and calls signals they are supposed to stop. Where was the warning at least.

I've never heard that they couldnt do this.

I know the refs have the option to make them stop but I know in HS this is done all the time.

I've personally seen it called at least 4 times in my life. Usually they get a warning first.

HS is a different deal, but in college there are strict rules about when the bands can play, when the cheerleaders and mascots can be on the field/sidelines, etc.

I noticed the Baylor band as well, they were definitely playing when the teams were at the line of scrimmage. The teams were right in front of their section too, really pissed me off that no one said anything. The SMU band actually GOT a 15 yard penalty for this in 86 against aTm.

PS If you're wondering why the Mustang Band marched so little in halftime, it was because there was supposed to be a 'combined performance' with the Baylor Band. The SMU band prepared for a shorter show to make time for the combined thing, only to have the BU band call this week and back out of it.

The QBs supposed to realize that his players can't hear signals, and raise his hands high to signal the crowd to quiet. If it doesn't he backs away, and asks the refs to quiet the crowd. This used to be a BIG problem with crowds at College Station purposely doing this on every play to disrupt the opponents offense.

That's why you see QBs using a lot of hand signals now. Baylor's Band was not being too Baptist a University by doing that but they have been in the Big Smelve for too many years. Didn't see a false start by our offense with the Baylor Band playing one note as loud as they can so maybe it didn't bother them much.

I know one year they warned Longview's band for it. But didnt know you could actually get a penalty for it.

remember in key long drives SMU used to play Peruna in a hushed tone when opposing teams came to the line and then after the ball was snapped continue loudly. And we used to have long drives with the running game.

Yep, very purposely quieted. Didn't hear that tonight. We either need to inform the new band director that he needs to set a new record for playing Peruna during a VERY IMPORTANT game, or find an old Mustang band member more dedicated to ahtletics to direct the Mustang Band.

Completely classless. As were the BU fans who were clapping and yelling during the moment of silence/prayer for the Hurricane Katrina. Absolutely shameful.
Most of the BU fans I saw were cool. The noise during the prayer was mostly from the tools sitting behind the end zone.

I thought most Baylor fans I saw represented their university extremely well-they certainly were much better FANS than SMU will ever have. There was that little group in the end zone though that also was chanting during about 15 seconds of both the dang prayer AND the national anthem. Never seen that before

In defense of the Baylor fans in the end zone yelling during the prayer and national anthem. You can not hear the PA in the end zone and on the east side of the stadium. It is a pathetic system. As soon as they realized what was happening, they got quiet.

I have to really watch what is going on on the field during pregame to keep from talking during the prayer and to know when to sing the anthem and varsity. All of the SMU fans that sit on the west side should just spend one pregame on the east side and you will see what I am talking about. You can never hear the PA, pregame, during the game and post game. It is a terrible system.

The Baylor band's tactics were not legal under the rules. The referees had the right to issue a warning on their own about playing when the opponents are at the line of scrimmage. Of course, this would have been done if our QB's had complained. Maybe nobody told Eckert he should ask for quiet, or maybe he just couldn't figure it out. He was probably too busy looking for the defensive end who was going to be rushing with his arms in the air, ie. where he was going to throw the ball.
