BIG AL's CORNERI waited a couple of daze after the game, so I could water it down a bit.
Why after Massey's touchdown, did he not carry the pigskin again except for a third down and ten play? The Ryan Kennedy question has been asked, so I won't harp on it. Where was Devin Lowery? Why didn't Cory Muse play? What was Justin Rogers injury early in the game. Same question for Caleb Peveto? The fourth down call before half as been worked over by now. Things of concern. Guy Morriss said in the second half "they could run at will" and he is correct. Baylor had around 335 yards in the second half. It's no secret SMU's defense was completely dominated, and "worn" out in the second half. But I'm sure you have heard the old saying "stop them, and get off the field" My worry is why we stayed on the field so long. We played 4 tackles, all of them juniors. And all of them weighing at least 280 lbs. We played 3 DE's two juniors, and one senior. Besides our starting LB's, Rico Harris and Reggie Carrington got a lot of snaps. That crew has two sixth year SR's, one fifth year Senior, a redshirt Soph. and a true Soph. DB's had three backups, "that I caught" with Lindley, Goode and Blackmon. After SMU went up 14-6 in the second half, we could have taken control of the game, but the defense let Baylor drive the length of the field, for a touchdown and two point conversion. Then Baylor scored twenty two unanswered points! Baylor ran 85 offensive plays to SMU's 62! Time of possession 37:14 to 22:46. This wasn't USC we were playing, this was a team that hadn't won a road game since Moby [deleted] was a minnow! Now the offense sure didn't help the cause, but the defense fell apart in the second half. Speaking of the offense? is anyone else tired of those slow developing running plays? It's hard to believe both of our qb's threw all of those passes in the Spring, Summer and training camp, and can look that inept! If I did not know better, I would think we never practiced special teams, first punt....blocked! First field goal (at the 4 yd line) blocked! Kickoff return fumbled! That's it for now, I'm getting tired head.
We failed to execute simple plays. BU executed the simple plays. Our QBs did a poor job hitting receivers on simple routes. BU executed these plays. That opened up the BU running game. Our defense lost outside containment the entire second half. BU simply bounced running play after running play outside for nice gains. Our DE should have been taught by their coaches on about the second day of two-a-days (the first day being picture day) to not lose containment. Pitiful job by the DE coach.
Next week we have to improve the short passing game. And just for grins, it would be nice to throw a pass or two OVER the MIDDLE. The offense must start to execute the simple plays consistently. We are not good enough to screw up short plays. We can't make up 3rd and long time after time. Defense has to play with more discipline. Our defense was stellar in the first half. Now they need to put it together for a whole game. We were ahead 14-6 and didn't put BU away. Bottom line, our kids (and coaches) have not learned how to win. Winning is discipline and execution. And not making stupid 8th grade decisions to go for it on every fourth down. For a school that brags about how well our kids do in school we sure play dumb. This team has much more talent than in years past and should do much better than the effort in the second half last Saturday.
Well said JTStang. SMU is not a good football team. Period. Baylor should have beat us and they did. They are a school that is more commited to winning than SMU. Baylor hired a coach that had proven success in Division 1-A as a head coach. The results showed Saturday. Bennett simply cannot manage a football game. He consistently shows he is not head coaching material. If SMU makes changes next year the big question becomes why in the hell would any coach with any proven success want to come to this crap hole to coach?
The defense was 'worn'out by baylor in the last two drives...but I saw NOTHING imaginative about the defensive play calling. Obviously, they are a bigger OL compared to our DL...
Bennett's only thoughts MUST have been that Shawn Bell will eventually make a mistake. If you see your team being slowly overmatched, why on earth wouldn't you do some stunts, LB blitzes, Corner blitzes,... ANYTHING to break their rhythm? I saw nothing of that...we just let them slowly march down the field twice. They bright side of this, if there is one, is Massey's play (again, why put Fred Turner in on the 15 when we get the fumbled punt, along with Eckert who just went COLD 3 and out?). Overall I thought the defense did pretty well. The difference in the game was the bonehead call to go for it at the end of the first half (3pts, plus 1pt we missed going for 2, plus 2pts instead of 1pt Baylor gets going for 2... = 5pts). Add the blocked FG and we win yet again. Reminds me of the Tulsa game last year.
7-5 at Kentucky after 3 losing seasons is proven success
Being that I am left nutted, I would probably give my right nut for 7-5 and save my left for 8-4 or better.
The defense played well for a half against Tech last year, and two years before that! We have been saying the same crap for years, and we are not getting any better. We just try and hold on until the end of the year, when we beat a few spare teams, so we can say "WE WON TWO OF OUR LAST THREE" etc.....
Well we got the answer on Cory Muse, it was a pulled hamstring. Has anyone heard what happened to Caleb Peveto?
When you think about it, the fourth down call before halftime was worth four points. Without the pre-half fieldgoal, Baylor doesn't go for the two point conversion after their first touchdown. Then after our final score, we kick the extra point to tie, well...... if we don't get it blocked like the first time we were at Baylor's five yard line!@!!
