Time for a change: SMU making move at QB

UNIVERSITY PARK – After only one game, SMU coach Phil Bennett has made a quarterback change. Out is Tony Eckert and in is Jerad Romo.

Romo's mobility is a big reason he's starting against No. 22 TCU on Saturday night at Ford Stadium.

In terms of accuracy, both quarterbacks fared poorly against Baylor.

Combined, the quarterbacks went 9-for-26 for 106 yards and one touchdown pass.

Some of the problems with the quarterback play are accuracy and the inability to use the running game more to set up the pass. The three- and four-receiver sets and shotgun formations didn't provide SMU with enough offense. Bennett said he gave up on the run too early.

Bennett said he's still committed to the spread offense, and the play calling of offensive coordinator Rusty Burns. However, in Bennett's second season, he took over the playing calling from previous coordinator Larry Edmondson.

"I thought we played better offensively," Bennett said of the Baylor game. "But I'll tell you this, last year we wouldn't have scored any points. This year we scored 23 points and played bad."

So it sounds like Rusty is making most of the calls.......

If not, Rusty needs to be.....

I keep seeing these comments about Rusty Burns, like he is some kind of shackled genius. I don't get it.

Don't know if he is a genius or not, but I think Bennett has proven that play calling might not be his calling. Still hope he pulls it out in the long run, but time has run out.
