Baylor Band Tactics Legal?

As a former Meadow's student (BM '99, MM '01) I will say that is not so much a case of Mustang Band membership being discouraged as of band itself not even showing up on the radar.

This may often be the case, but it does occur where people are flat out told that they cannot be in the Mustang Band, or that they will have to choose between one or another. I personally know someone who went out of his way to hide the fact he was in the band because he felt it might put him in the doghouse. I guess it depends on your instrument/who your professors are.

Listen, I like to be aware of the rules of the game so I do not make stupid statements like some people do. There is a rule and I am curious as to why it was allowed if illegal or why our coaches did not stop it if that is what was necessary. I opened by saying it did not make a difference in the game, but coaches knowing or not knowing the rules can make a difference in a game.

This is straight from the NCAA rulebook.

"Persons subject to the rules, including bands, shall not create any
noise that prohibits a team from hearing its signals (Rule 1-1-6).
PENALTY—Dead-ball foul. 15 yards [S7, S27] from the succeeding spot.
Flagrant offenders, if players or substitutes, shall be disqualified
[S47]."

Thanks. I guess it is not required that the players point it out, but I would figure if there is no complaint to the official, the official will consider it is not hindering the play calling. From where I was located, I would have preferred a complaint. May not have bothered the players but sure was obnoxious to me.

What leads you to the conclusion that fans are "persons subject to the rules..."? I'll bet if you look they are not.

I know this much: Baylors band was intentionally trying to disrupt our offense with the stupid tuba noise. It was no honest mistake. If its legal, its ridiculous. If it was illegal, it should have been flagged or at least stopped. More than anything it was bush league by Baylor and if I had anything to say about it I would let them know it was not appreciated and their band will not be welcomed back to Dallas.

Yes their band playing up to our snaps was annoying however that is college football. That kind of crap happens and that is why the college game is better than the pros...it is filled with students being students.

I thought the only ridiculous thing about the bands was that their band was five times the size of ours and I couldn't hear our band at half over the conversation of a student twenty rows below me. Honestly lets just pipe in the music and let the twirler do her thing because she was the only good part of that once proud tradition.

students being students is one thing, but bands are official representatives of university. They don't buy tickets, but even if they did, yell all you want all the time, but the tuba noise is artificial.

I was at an A&M game in the early '80s at Texas Stadium. In the 4th quarter with the game still undecided, our band was penalized for the same tactic the Baylor band did REPEATEDLY...only Baylor was WORST

I will go ahead and 2nd what couch 'em said about being told to choose between Mustang Band and Meadows. When I had considered being a music major prior to my matriculation at SMU(I used to do summer wind programs here during HS) Jack Delaney basically told me that in order to have a chance to play in his ensemble, he didn't want me going over "across the street" to march. He even tried to bribe me with matching scholarship money just so Mustang Band couldn't have me and he could stick me in a practice room so I could practice just to have a chance at being in his precious ensemble. Needless to say, I walked out of his office never to return.

I also know of persons that were in my Freshman class that were told they had to choose between Mustang Band and Meadows. It is definitely not a rumor that Meadows has no love for the Band.

I love the Mustang Band, but it is so small they need to be miked.
