UCF whipped Baylor by 10 and Baylor is losing 8, yes 8 starters on defense.

We had an easy non-conference schedule in basketball. We essentially played two competitive games, a very low percentage.
That worked out fantastically for us in basketball. Got our confidence up early in the season with a young team and got the ready for conference play.
What is wrong with trying that approach in football? Not saying we shouldn't be at a better point in the program under June at this point. Just saying let's try walking first - 3 easy games, one hard one non-conference. Once we hit the ten win mark, then lets add a second hard game and up the challenge...

Year 2 under Larry Brown......year 7 under June. Larry has publicly stated he wants to schedule better non-conference competition. June has never said that.

Kind of hard to know which games will be "easy" when they're scheduled several years in advance. What happens if some of the "easy" teams we schedule now become good in a few years, do we run away from them too? Wouldn't it be easier to just fix the talent level so we don't have to be scared of anyone?

JasonB- if you think the answer for our OOC scheduling is TCU and three creampuffs, then you're not being realistic about what it will take to get SMU back to relevance in college football

Compare it apples to apples. It is way easier to turn around a basketball program in a shorter time than a football program. See UCF. George O leary has been there since 2004, and they have had a 0-11 year, 2 x 4-8 seasons and a 5-7 season in 2011 before going 10-4 in 2012 and 12-1 in 2013. They even had "fire George O leary" chatter and a website...just like the "fire June" movement. I will laugh at everyone if our team pulls it off and sends us bowling new years day.

Calling [deleted] on your editing of O'Leary's career. He has won 5 Divisional Championships and 3 Conference Championships and had 2 Top 25 finishes in what 3 years. Plus 5 seasons better than June's best season. Its one thing to have short rebuilding years after championships and its another to be an average football program.
O'Leary is 72-56 overall at UCF and 51-29 in conference Jones is 36-41 overall at SMU and 26-22 in conference
O'leary also started poorly at 0-12 so they both started from the bottom only UCF had no football history. O'Leary started from scratch

Walking before we run in year 7? No depth at WR and waiting on freshman to come in in year 7? Big12Mustang must be FTHP. How many years do you give them to turn a program around 10? Your apples to oranges comment was ignorant because we are not talking about year 2 of a football program. Most football coaches are only given 3 or 4 years to turn a football team around. We are in 7.

There's more teams and more competition for talent in basketball plus a much smaller percentage of teams can get to the tournament versus teams that can make bowls (68/300+ v 70/120+). If anything it's harder to turn around a basketball program in a short period of time.

And at least O'Leary has had some good recruiting classes. Ours have been bad so i don't see a bright future with June here.

I didn't edit his career, I only pointed out that O leary had those bad years too as well as people wanting him out. June went 1-11 his first year, then won 7-8 games until this last year. We had one season that we went 5-7 coming into a new conference (2013). 2013 was a rebuilding year. June has no excuse now.

a rebuilding year from a .500 regullar season? June ain't building jack. June is stair-stepping down for 3 years and headed for a 4th and final year before he is run out of town
