Jankovich

Postby ponyphi07 » Thu Mar 13, 2014 12:02 am

I know it has been said on here before, but we can't forget Jankovich. I hope he stays long enough to be our next head coach. He does a lot behind the scenes.

Check out this article from March 2013:

"You won’t see this relationship bearing fruit this March. Odds are you won’t see it next March either. But if several Marches down the road, SMU is in the NCAA tournament conversation, you’ll be able to trace that back to when a head coach for a Missouri Valley Conference school decided to take a flier on becoming an assistant and working for a Hall of Famer."......HA!!

People on PF don't give him the credit he's due from what I've come to understand. I've met the guy a handful of times, really sharp guy that knows his stuff, very easy to talk to and interesting to speak with. He's going to be a very good coach, hopefully the foundation is laid in the next few years that it will be a seamless transition for him and the kids keep coming. The only thing holding Jank back from being a really good coach is the name right now, if he's able to have a foundation and win some games, he'll be a household name before too long. What he did at Illinois State was pretty ridiculous, got a lot of respect for the guy and his players apparently do too.

Good find....Tim is a class act. he is also has an MBA from KSU to go along with acceptance into SMU Law school. He will bear fruit here. Kids ike him...he is much more of a student athletes coach than LB, but it works so far.

I've met Coach Jank too. The guy loves SMU. Once this program is a consistent player on the national scene I have no doubt that Coach Jank will keep us there. Tremendous guy to have on our bench.

I didn't love the Jank hire, not bc he's not loyal, a bright mind, or a great guy. It's his rep from within the MVC that concerned me. Wasn't known as a strong x and os guy, and.et the inmates run the asylum hews starting to see real success there, but his unt days were pretty average.

I agree with you on his shortcomings but I think those are/will continue to be corrected with LB to teach. Working with a coach like that for 3-5 years does wonders for a young guy imo. I know I couldn't begin to call an entire game from a HC standpoint, but to point out nuances, defenses or understand situations are no problem. It's hard to be a good X's and O's guy without a lot of quality teaching and a lot of experience doing it. I think both of those shortcomings can be attributed to young and inexperienced to a great degree imho.

Anyways, where you been? Avoiding the wagon?

Jankovich knew enough to accept a position that would enable him to improve any shortcomings he may have had on the Xs and Os. Sounds like a self-aware man who's willing to work to make himself better. Can't ask for much more.

Regardless of his rep, I assume he'll get calls for head coach interviews at the end of this season and wouldn't be surprised or upset if he left. It felt like he was brought on as insurance against LB leaving after 1 or 2 seasons, which appears increasingly unlikely. The thing about great coaches is that their assistants tend to take promotions at other programs

I bet so, too. And, as the hatchets begin swinging the phone will start ringing. It wouldn't surprise me if Auburn hasn't already been sniffin' around.

All true, LB isn't going to be around for more than 3 more years though. Jank leaves, you start over. And Jank is a lot more capable then most assistants out there. He could be the HC right now of SMU.

Not only is Jank learning from Larry Brown. He also learned under Kansas coach, Bill Self. So, perhaps he's a better coach than he was at UNT

He did a pretty impressive job at Illinois State. UNT is a dumpster fire. Hard to fault his failures there. I also think Benford will be a good coach but it probably won't be at UNT.
