I'm not going to apologize for any of my comments regarding the Jones administration. I'm no fan of his on many counts, but I do acknowledge that he has given us a little more street cred.

But I will say that it really doesn't matter what we think or what anyone else thinks. What matters is what the 85 in that locker room think about each other, the coaches and their attitude.

I do believe that they play for June. And I do believe he connects with kids.

I think we can leave it like this:

All of us want SMU to be successful in the worst way. We have emotionally invested our time and our dollars. We may argue on what is the right path to get there.

I wouldn't have shown up yesterday at Ford if it didn't matter to me. It did.

If you lived on campus you had to find your own place to stay, at your own expense, until the dorms opened back up around Jan. 15. Summer nationals and other major meets were mostly on your own dime. Boo Hoo for these athletes who are put up in hotel rooms for some of preseason practice, before every game, and while practicing for the bowls. Also, what is the amount of stipend the non-campus members receive. It's not chump change at SMU because of the COLA in Dallas per NCAA. Guys, I wish it were that simple, but attendance and game day atmosphere do matter. Look at the number of recruits who have commented on the poor attendance at SMU sporting events. Basketball doesn't even schedule visits to home games. Guys don't want to play in an empty stadium or one half filled with apathetic fans. If no one is in the stands like yesterday, the game was nothing more than a glorified scrimmage.

Missing time with family and friends at home during the holidays so you can camp out in the Radisson and keep practicing in the bitter cold is a lot of fun too. You don't have to feel sorry for the players but at least recognize what they do for the university. Athletes make tremendous sacrifices to the schools they attend. In my opinion, win or lose, they earn the right to complain about attendance and state a desire to play somewhere outside of their geographical location.

And trust me, I am more pissed off at this team than most of you. They have more talent than their production showed. And please stop attacking McD. He didn't quit. He's just not very good. And finally, the entire team did not quit. I believe it was a small number of divas who did not give their all. Unfortunately, that happens to all teams.

Actually the coach I'm looking for is summed up in the way my boy Jerry Kill at Minnesota described his philosophy: "A physical, hard-nosed football team that can run the ball and play defense."

Mix in a FB, a TE and a punter, and I'm good.

We have some work to do on the field to make this team worth watching for someone outside of the direct SMU community - which i might remind you is the third smallest in 1-a football (behind only Rice and Wake).

All of us can help off the field. Directly confront (in a friendly way) all SMU fans and any college football fans you know who dont go to games and ask them why not - and let them know how fun it is. Ask them to meet you at your tailgate.

If you dont have a tailgate get one.

If you dont have season tickets - get them - its worth it easily

if you have season tickets - get two more

Talk is up in your circle of influence - dont concede the water cooler talk to the big state schools - i dont care how much they roll their eyes -

Try a basketball game also - that team might be getting better faster then football.
