That is actually incorrect. Marinatto stated that SMU was brought under consideration to be a travel partner for TCU. When TCU decided not to join, the Big East made the decision to get into Texas with two markets, so they brought on SMU and Houston. You can find the video of Marinatto saying that on the Ponyfans YouTube channel

Let's just lay it out there. On a national scale:

Nobody gives a damn about SMU football.
Nobody gives a damn about Houston football.
Nobody gives a damn about UCF football.
Nobody gives a damn about SMU basketball.
Nobody gives a damn about Houston basketball.
Nobody gives a damn about UCF basketball.

SMU brings a market, a recruiting bed, ridiculously deep pockets, tradition, and academics to the Big East. How far does that go? Debateable. One thing that isn't debateable is that SMU has made huge strides in the last few years to upgrade facilities, bring in the best available coaching talent, and we have spent-spent-spent. Are our results on par with our spending? Not yet, but we're on our way and we have every tool we need...and we've put our money where our mouth is.

UCF. Houston. Welcome to the Big East where nobody gives a damn about you either. I love how good it feels to have gone to SMU, and not your school.

We were supposed to be TCU's travel partner and rival, but of course we couldn't expect you to have some semblance of knowledge on the subject now could we?

what will SMU bring? another warm weather location for late season football games; an escape from brutal winter weather in hoops; more TV exposure for the league in Dallas...and better looking coeds than a lot of those northeastern schools
