Will the SMU IPF look better than Houston's new IPF

Post by smusic 00 »

Have a hard time believing PSCA was at the dinner if he doesn't remember who wrote the 2.5M check. It was sort of a big deal.

Although it was open bar and the beer flowed like wine. CM also made a nice announcement regarding fundraising. Putting money where the mouth is, so to speak.

I always thought the IPF will go across what is now the north end of the soccer field, with soccer getting moved to what is now the football practice field.

I thought there was talk of an indoor track surrounding the practice field inside the proposed IPF. So basically putting a box on top of Wescott and existing track so to speak. Then Pettus becomes a 'football pitch' only.

Last version I heard had two practice fields, going across what's now the soccer field. Indoor (with indoor track) near the parking garage, outdoor closer to Ford. One or two rows of parking behind the freshman dorms would be sacrificed.

Need an indoor track for title9 purposes and an olympic caliber surface for local citizens to walk laps

Less importantly, you could have track meets and get 100+ football/track guys on campus repeatedly.

CM said a lot of things about the IPF, facilities etc. and the reality of today's world, recruiting and recruits. He said, stop talking about Big12 expansion etc., no one is calling until we have the facilities ... even with the W's. The facilities drive the recruits ... the one's you want. How many pairs of cleats do we get (what kind), how many pair of gloves, uni's ... what do they look like, IPF, weight room etc. No longer good enough to have OK, or even good.

They said the project has been approved, now getting founding. It will be at the soccer field, and the soccer facility will move to the old/current Inter fields. At the event last night somebody (not sure who) wrote a check for $2.5mm toward the effort.

So when do they expect the 100 million dollar upgrade to Ford to begin, to bring it up to Big 12 facility standards?

This is a three phase project. Phase 1 is IPF and soccer relocation. That phase is the one at hand with the 50M or so price tag. Other components including what you are referencing are included in one of the other two phases.

Formal announcement on the IPF before end of fiscal year in May. Will be one of the best facilities of its kind in the country and representative of our long term goals with the program.
Back off Warchild seriously.

In reality, "when" the facility opens is, honestly, pretty irrelevant (of course this wouldn't be the case if the timeline was absurdly long). Is it nice for the program to have shiny new digs? Of course. But what really matters here? That recruits and any other conference drunk enough to consider SMU for membership know--concretely--what's coming and when it breaks ground. And both groups know.

Why? The New Natatorium only took 30+ years to get started. How long could the IPF take?

Here's a peek into the future:

June 1, 2016

A $25million gift from Don McDonaterson will help provide an indoor practice facility. Project planning and design will begin immediately. The construction start date has not yet been determined.

I hope Don's brother, Dan McDonaterson and their sister, Dawn Ponyupdadoughsoon don't wait that long to make a pledge because planning and design can take a very long time.
