Klemm said the same type of BS, and a few days later he was poaching. Bottom line is that usually the recruits have more of a relationship with the coach that recruited them than the actual university itself.

there is a difference though. In Klemm's case the recruits lived much closer to the new school. In Phillips case the recruits live closer to the old school. I suspect that is going to be a factor will some. Plus SMU and UH are very different in many ways although both urban. I'd be happy with any switches but he also is going to have other contacts. There are hundreds of recruits along the Gulf Coast

good point re: location. Which is why I kept complaining about relying on Klemm and the Cali pipeline that was destined to dry up.

Even JJ realizes that things have gone south for the R and S. Kudos to him for not staying with a sinking ship. the question is...will Phillips be the coordinator and coach another position such as receivers? Anybody heard if he wil be a position coach?

In terms of overall admission standards yes there is a large difference. However, for athletes, there is probably not much of a difference between the two schools. Folks here have commented that our admission standards for athletes are not really the reason for them not being able to play. I personally don't know but when you compete for top athletes, we really can't raise the bar that much above other schools.

I think you are right on with this, which is why we have to walk a fine line with athletes. No point in admitting a kid/giving him a schollie if he is going to flunk out by mid-terms. Granted, we give these kids a lot of academic support and no doubt they work their butts off, but there are still kids who can't hack it even with the extra assistance (Darryl Fields comes to mind as a recent example).

Well, yeah, there is that. But I am sure there are still many who do just that and still struggle a bit. I remember being in class with a Willie Davis one year; kid showed up for every class, stayed after to ask the prof questions, and still had some difficulties with the course. Certainly wasn't due to lack of effort; there are just some things with which we all struggle, and given the commitment we demand of our athletes I hope that have every opportunity to succeed on and off the field. If they fail to take advantage of that opportunity, to your point, that's on them.

Agree. There were certainly courses that I had probs with and it wasn't due to lack of effort. However, I believe that a lot of profs will give you the benefit of the doubt if you are making a real effort and demonstrate such.

Looking forward to him bringing in some Texas kids. Like others have said, the CA connection is great, but Texas needs to be our bread and butter.

Hopefully Zach Line is back and not in NFL next year. I don't think any one coach can mess him up too bad!
