UT actually hired him as Assistant head Coach in 2011 but he got the Titans job a couple of weeks later. He's 50-needs to make a jump pretty soon to head coach

GREAT suggestion.

Jerry Gray has been a successful coach at a number of schools and has done everything he can to get a HC position - I remember him trying to get the Memphis job when they hired Porter. Jerry is super hungry, and would foam at the mouth to get this opportunity.

BTW, he was a coach here, too. If memory serves, he was a DB coach here under Cavan, or perhaps Rossely. He would be well versed in our issues going in.

Gray could do well here imo.

Can Jerry Gray recruit? Far as I can tell, he's only spent one season as a college coach in 2011 at Texas

Wasn't he at SMU once as well?

You're right, I'm wrong.

"He broke into the coaching ranks in 1995 as the defensive backs coach at Southern Methodist."

Still, though, my point remains: how experienced is he as a recruiter?

Let me suggest the following candidates: Troy Calhoun ($900,000 at Air Force), Bronco Mendenhall ($1,000,000 at BYU), Kyle Food ($800,000 at Rutgers), Mark Hudspeth ($825,00 at La Lafayette), Larry Coker ($350,000 at UT San Antonio) - maybe Larry has shown us that old coaches can still get the job done, Paul Rhodes ($1,700,000 at Iowa State) - his job could be in trouble, Dana Holgarsen ($2,400,000 West Virginia) - probably going to be fired?

Much like Jim Mora, he has little to no recruiting experience at all but of course that can all be negated by doing as Mora did and hiring a staff with a strong regional recruiting focus. Big question mark as to whether he'd do that or not.

might be a lot of Texas recruiters looking for a job soon-Jerry Gray actually was on that staff for about a month

Stallion- I suspect that those who are recruiting for the whorens would not be good for us at they really don't have to do much recruiting. Our recruiters are going to have to be top notch salesmen as well as good coaches.

Finally someone else mentions Larry Coker

Oscar Giles was probably the 2nd best recruiter SMU has had but he just stayed at SMU for less than 2 years. He's about their 4-5th best recruiter. Many national Top 20 recruiters. Bruce Chambers is one of the very top DFW recruiters in the game. Worked and succeeded Freddie James at Dallas Carter and has had a lot of success at Desoto.
