I fully acknowledge that LB put together an amazing staff and the results speak for themselves. And there is no doubt that JJ did not focus on the recruiting strengths of his staff. JJ is about loyalty, and also seems to believe that the kids will just come to him, his approach to recruiting is totally different. My disagreement with many pertains to the accusation of laziness. I quite understand that there are other approaches to recruiting that are worth exploring. I do have some reservations as to how successful focusing on recruiting first and foremost will be due to my belief that a kid would have factors playing into signing for LB that simply won't be the case in FB. Stadium atmosphere, TV exposure, quality of opponent (that we might actually hang with), need to success academically for longer, etc.Rebel10 wrote:LB put together a better staff in basketball than June did in football and that is what you fail to acknowledge. LB know he needs more than 1 or 2 players to turnaround this team in a strong AAC conference. That is why all of the recruits were good in this incoming class not just 1 or 2. As far as not being able to turn a football program around see Ball St or ASU. You make it sound like it is a cakewalk getting a 5 star kid. You come across as more of a June fan than an SMU fan but I hope that is not the case. The staff makes all the difference in the world.Mustangsabu wrote:Have we not beaten this to death. LB could be here for just a year or two and turn the program around. That is not possible in football beyond the turnaround that JJ made in 2 years. Basketball is a totally different animal, 1 or 2 players can make all the difference. Not so in football. Basketball is the strength of the AAC. Crowds are easier to draw as far as filling Moody (you need far fewer for great atmosphere), the new Moody is far more top of the line than Ford (which is still a nice Stadium), and these kids only expect to be here (the really good ones) for a year or two, don't need to keep them in school while they develop.ponyinNC wrote:All you have to do is look over to Moody to see what a motivated, aggressive coaching staff can do.
SMU had literally no basketball history (recent) or street cred in DFW or anywhere else for that matter. And yet, in 2 straight recruiting classes, we have landed a top ranked local kid - mcdonalds all american and possible one-and-done types of players!
I'd argue that football was actually perceived better than basketball at SMU up until last year - so June should be able to recruit and do what LB does. But for whatever reason (lazy, ego, coaching/recruiting style), he just doesn't do it or have a staff that can do it (outside of Mason and JP).
It makes no sense - the blueprint is right in front of him! Young, aggressive recruiters that get you top players and you can coach the heck out of them.
If I were to hit the lottery or strike oil, I would sponsor the return of baseball to SMULHS81 wrote:The Maddux Brothers, Greg & Mike. . . Return of SMU Baseball in 2014
