The current recruiting problem is that the coaching staff has no interest in recruiting. You really think a Gen Studies major or something similar will make up for that?
Yea, I do.

That's unfortunate, really shows you June lovers just don't understand what it takes to build a real program.

Not a June lover. Just a realist.

Doesn't sound like realism, sounds like more of June's patented deflecting.

From the time SMU entered the SWC in 1918 until the DP in 1986 (that's 69 years), the only two SWC schools* with had a higher winning percentage than SMU were UT & Arkansas.
* - had to be a SWC member for more than 12 years to qualify.
Oh, and for you or any other poster that wants to single out SMU for cheating during the Pony Express days, that gold Trans-Am was originally the property of A&M, not SMU.
Thank you for correcting revisionist history. You can't pick and choose the baseline. Yes we had periods of mediocrity but those periods coincided with bad choices for our Fball coaches. I am not saying Jibes is bad, but when the right coach was in place we won championships.
During the 1950's, 60's, and 70's we averaged about two and half winning seasons a year, with half of our conference being small private schools. Here is a link to the score of everyfootball game we ever played:
http://www.jhowell.net/cf/scores/SouthernMethodist.htmSo, okay, we were competitve within the SWC - you are right on that. But after UT and Arky there was really nobody in the SWC that was consistently great. We were a decent team within a mediocre conference, one everybody knew was destined to break up.
Oh, and it was shown time and again when we had the right coach he left as soon as he could. Fry had, I think, one winning season and left. Meyer, two. Cavan had one and was looking to go to Ole Miss. That means the program has issues, not just the coaches.[/quote]
I know the records.
Fry was fired and we hired smith instead if bum phillips. Meyer left for a job. Do did Saben, Carroll, hot and a slew if other college coaches. If it is a systemic problem since the 40s where we can't compete for championships what should we do about it and why are we even playing football. You are just making excuses. A good coach should and would compete.
TCU had less success than us since the forties. If we hire the right coach start winning and pay to keep him there is no reason why we should not be consistently competitive. Look at stanford, northwestern Vanderbilt duke. Miami stunk until Jimmy Johnson. There are plenty if examples.

Finally got around to reading Rick's column....WOW! Talk about telling one side of a story. I respect Rick as a sports journalist but he clearly has no clue what he's writing about here. He just took generic information and likely talked to a few people (I'm sure pro-JJ) to come up with very short sided conclusions.
As others mentioned, going back twenty years he's comparing apples to oranges. Rick fails to mention the true story behind recruiting. He fails to mention that a majority of his wins have come against teams with a Sagarin rating over 100. JJ has only one signature win in six years, TCU. In every other big game we have been dominated. Rick conveniently failed to mention the ASU scandal.
Sorry but that piece is an absolute joke. What I take from it is if you want mediocrity at $2 million a year, JJ is your guy SMU.

Those still squawking about a General Studies major or some athlete-friendly major are wrong, IMO. SMU has enough places to stash student athletes, it is not an issue. Now, maybe SMU could do a better job of providing the resources to make sure these kids go to class, but if they go to class, I believe they will stay eligible.

They have class monitors to make sure they are going to class.

Here is Risk's response to my e-mail questioning his comments. Note, I said nothing about firing JJ in my e-mail. JJ got him hook line and sinker.
"SMU wins 27.2 percent of its games over a 19-year span, regularly drawing crowds in the 11,000, 12,000 and 13,000 range. Jones show up and takes SMU to four bowl games in five years and you want to fire him. It's tougher to win and recruit there than you think. If SMU was still a destination program for kids, it would be in the Big 12 -- not the American Athletic Conference."

I was reading an article from a Colorado site the other day that said the new JUCO standards that require a 2.5 GPA also have some core requirements and limit PE courses that can count toward transfer to something like 2 courses. The Colorado Head Coach said even with the .5 increase in JUCO GPA requirements it now would be much easier to get transfers from JUCOs into Colorado since so many JUCOs loaded up on PE courses that previously Colorado wouldn't accept. Kind of a new perspective on rising standards for JUCOs and how they will hurt some programs and actually could help others

I think the academic issues are more along the lines of keeping GPAs up, VERY LIMITED number of slots in the new School of Education and our student-athletes having to compete with the general population for those limited slots, increased emphasis on core classes, GPA and class prerequisites now imposed before you can declare for certain majors. All of that makes progress toward a degree more challenging.
SMU has done an admirable job increasing academic support for student-athletes. When a kid is having trouble, we do have people/teammates assigned to make sure kids go to class. In some instances, SMU provides services that go even beyond that such as providing student-athlete with learning differences copies of class notes, etc. But I've also heard of cases where monitors show up at dorm rooms at the assigned times and the kid they're supposed to escort is simply not there. So there is only so much you can do.

...apparently you and/or Rick think that our facilities (weigh room) are sub par and with no IPF we don't have a chance to compete. If it's so bad, why does he want to stay then

? No, this isn't Texas, Nebraska, Michigan, Ala, or LSU.
