The reason Baylor still gets lots of interest from recruits is that they are in the Big XII and we're not. I'm sorry but kids want to play against Kansas, UT, TT, OU. Hopefully our new conference will help with UAB, Memphis, Tulane, UTEP and Tulsa.

Couple their lack of success on the floor/turf with what the players & Bliss created in the BB program (murder scandal) & alumni funding dries up (especially a fundamentally conservative school like BU).

Answer 1- Baylor. This is serious, TC. Firing the coach does not change things. Alums don’t tolerate such actions (see also Colorado’s sex scandal).

SWC: Already have stated same TC (above). Despite BU’s double under grad population their BB games are not much more attended than SMU (even with their "strength of schedule"). As far as Strength of Schedule (FB/BB), we know better than anyone how 0-3 affects attendance, tv coverage, media exposure, recruiting, etc… AND- Media exposure… Waco??? C’mon, TC…

What I said ALL along: I hope for the best with BU ( I am a Baptist, if it matters)- but the train is leaving the station in Waco & the alumni funding is NOT on it. I don’t know where you come from, but the Baptist community is not supporting what has happened @ BU. IMO, given time, BU will move out of the Big XII. Again, Guy & Drew have a tough road to hoe. And getting a couple of mid-tier commitments doesn't change the dark clouds that cover the Heart-of-Texas campus.

you know I don't know what you've got against Baylor, but their 3 4 star recruits in 1 year is better than we've done in about 15 years. Get over it because you are looking like a fool to anyone who knows the first thing about recruiting. Baylor if they can get a few more kids like they have just might end up with a Top 10 OR BETTER class. If Baylor is getting mid-tier recruits this year then SMU has been scraping the bottom of the barrell for years. I'm not sure if SMU has ever gotten 3 4 star recruits in one year in the history of the program

Miles may be the next "Larry Johnson" out of Skyline-- I was not counting him in the mid-tier comment. I only talk of recruits being those brought in. IMO, I don't believe Miles EVER wears a BU jersey ( but that remains to be seen). The early commits are NOT recruits, yet.

As far as the JUCO signings, we all know that they are hit-or-miss because:
[1] Little "D" is played in JC so numbers are skewed up;
[2] Unlike FR, JC transfers have to mesh immediately;
[3] Grades/eligibility are usually an issue.

And as to your remark of me "looking like a fool", well it wouldn't be the first time. But considering that I played 61 JUCO BB games myself, I think I know a little about the process, recruiting, talent & the game itself.

Again, I have nothing against BU or of Scott Drew. He appears to be a strong recruiter, a grounded and good-intentioned man, but recruiting is his job. He has to sell what he has to offer & that's BU BB-- warts & all.

Carlton Dotson's trial comes out in the next 60 days at the worst time for BU BB. From this trial, it may also drag out issues about grades, drugs, etc. This will NOT go down well with the Baptist alum. As it grinds on through TV & papers, I believe it will take it's toll on all of BU sports program (just as did the DP proceedings). It will be 1 of the worst scandals in ncaa history, hell, it already is.

The issue at BU is bigger than a CJ recruit or Drew or Morris in FB. With all the DP history on the Hilltop, Stallion, I would think you'd see the big (bleak) picture @ BU. And I still do not believe BU sports will survive the scandal (in the same way we know BU today) regardless of any "Top 10" recruiting claases Drew brings in.

No based on years of posts I would be the last person to agree that Bay;or's National scandal would have a long term effect on their program. Once again SMU SUCKED (after the first 4 years) for one and only one reason: KENNETH PYE. Baylor is proving that not only can you recruit after an intense national scandal(which BTW was more intensely, broadly covered than the SMU scandal) but you can excell in recruiting. Its called turning lemons into lemonade. Baylor has not made the IDIOT decisions Kenneth Pye made -probably because they saw first hand what a true IDIOT Kenneth Pye was and the damage he did to the athletic program. Each and every decision Pye made was the WRONG decision(Ownby, recruiting restrictions, application restrictions, curiculm et al). OK I guess he made one correct decision-he hired a man of unquestioned integrity in Forrest Gregg. He should have turned Gregg loose on the SWC and let Gregg's reputation speak for the ethical changes in the program. Instead, Pye treated an athletic scandal as an academic scandal-WHICH IT NEVER WAS.

I am not going to mention any names but have "heard" it on more than one accasion that someone inside at Baylor, albeit an allum or fan, has offered "outside perks".

One involves a present commit being offered an auto.

It is strange that they would not have tighter control on the "goings on" at Baylor, or perhaps they do ....but this report comes from a very good source....arguably as high as one can get in the NCAA college b-ball arena.

My guess is that your source isn't a BU fan.

Stallion, I agree BU has been proactive (lemons into lemonade) while previous Admin decisions at SMU were almost suicidal. But it is way to early to think this scandal will go away.
And with the courtcase around the corner, it will be brought back front & center. Baylor's major problem is not the scandal nor ncaa-- it will be M-O-N-E-Y from the donors who support BU.

I have to believe Baylor is now running a post-Bliss clean program. I think if Drew hears about any hanky-panky, that recruit will no longer be a Baylor recruit. Why, because Baylor was death penalty eligible for the Bliss violations and got some relatively mild sanctions. If they do something while on this probation, I could see a real hammer come down on them. BTW, there are some schools that would rat them out in a heartbeat just to see them get disqualified from B-Ball competition for a year and see whether that creates a Big XII opening. A school from Ft. Worth comes to mind. So, no I can't believe that Baylor fans are that stupid.

You say that you like facts, and are only "stating the obvious," but then you make ridiculous comments about players wearing flak jackets. Sorry, but that just does not add up. Inflammatory statements such as those have nothing to do with any facts.

You say that the families of recruits are not going to want them to come to Baylor, yet BU has 3 recruits, while SMU just now got their very first one of all for 2005.

You say that BU gets "0 tv unless we are playing KU or UT," but yet you are just flat wrong about that. When I challenged you on it, you switch points, and talk about how when Baylor is on tv, they lose badly. How does the score of any game alter IN ANY WAY the numerical count of how many times that we were on tv last year?

Yes, we did get blown out once by final four bound OK State, and by Texas twice, but your statement about us getting blown out every time that we are on tv is wrong also.

You say that we have no financial commitment to sports, but have you been to the Ferrell Center lately? In addition to our new floor, we also recently put up two state of the art jumbovisions, which are very nice. We also got some new "hustle boards" put up. The coaches locker rooms were renovated a couple of years ago, and we also had our lighting redone. Do you believe that the SMU commitment is ahead of that? I go to Moody every single year, and I am not seeing it.

One of your other points, winning football championships, is totally irrelevant to the subject of this board, which is basketball. Baylor may never be a FB powerhouse, but that has never stopped Duke, Georgetown, Kansas, Iowa State, Xavier, Gonzaga, Memphis, or many other respectable schools from producing good teams.

Tell you what. Why don't you give us some simple yes or no questions here. Do you believe that SMU is ahead of baylor in:

attendance? last year we averaged 4,851 per game. The worst attended game last year came on a weeknight during the Christmas break, which drew 2,847 fans. Every other home game was a minimum of 3,500 +, even against lower profile schools like Texas Southern, Midwestern State, Stephen F. Austin, etc. Keep in mind that this was following the darkest moment in the history of the program, and the years before that we were averaging 6,000+ per home game. - link

strength of schedule? In addition to Purdue, we play Texas(twice), Texas Tech w/ Bobby Knight(twice), OU(twice), final four qualifier OK State(twice), and Missouri, and Kansas. Do you consider SMU's schedule to be harder than that?

media exposure? Even if we are not playing well, our games still make the national ESPN sportscenter broadcasts mosts nights, just by virtue of the teams which we are playing against. I hope that you do not intend to argue that because SMU is in Dallas, it receives a great deal of exposure from the DFW media. Unfortunately, the local stations here seem to barely cover your school at all.

Please reply with some factual things, instead of just pulling stuff out of left field or trying to change the subject. Do you believe that SMU is ahead of Baylor in the these areas?(things which you were the one to bring up, btw)

Our program is not great right now--not at all. But I do not see how you can look down your nose at us and claim to be superior to what Scott Drew is doing.
