It should be mentioned that in the 1980 game with Texas, Craig James would not have made that long touchdown run without the devasting block on their end by our Tight End..hmmm..what WAS that guys name? Do you remember his name Ponyte? Could it have been Clement Fox?

Without a doubt one of THE GREATEST PLAYS in SMU history.

It was as nice a piece of art as you will ever find at Meadows and a statement that the Pony Express had arrived.....man I miss those days.

Wasn't Copeland's greatest failure our being left out when UT and A&M stabbed us in the back by ruining the great traditions of the SWC?

1980 SMU win over UT

Post by MD_Stang »

...I was at that game, sitting in the UT student section...when Craig James turned the corner and went to the end zone...I jumped up and was cheering wildly...when I looked around, I was the only one standing...now that was a memorable moment!

Didn't David Dykhuizen have to recover from a serious knee or leg injury about a season before he made his catch against UT?

Not to beat a dead president, but a large part of SMU being left out when UT and A$M decided to go elsewhere was due to the totally ridiculous policies put in place by Ken Pye and his dreaded faculty senate/committee that caused the long-term destruction of our football program. These policies probably had more to do with the ruination of the program than the death penalty did. It appears that some of these policies have been loosened up but hopefully one day, the big money athletic supporters will be able to use their influence to allow SMU to truly compete on a level playing field so that our revenue sports can compete for conference championships.

While it totally sucks that SMU will never have access to the kind of conference money that Baylor gets because of its inclusion in the Big 12, I would much rather have us being successful in CUSA and competing for a conference championship instead of getting our [deleted] handed to us every conference gamelike Baylor does.

I'm thinking that would be Forrest Gregg who helped get us, tcu, and Rice into the WAC. Not sure of the timing on Pye, but we, Rice, tcu, and numerous businesses in Dallas, Houston, and FW should've filed a class action suit against the SWC breakup. That would've be vetoed by Pye.

At least the cost of litigation might've prevented the breakup????? :)

Yes, he did have a knee injury requiring surgery and prolonged rehab prior to the 1980 season. Arkpony, though I wasn't in the stands that day in Austin, I seem to remember that the block by our tight end wasn't devastating but meerly adequate. Of course with great backs like Dickerson and James, one simply need to have adequate blocks and Dickerjames did the rest.
