I know he is a terrific athlete DREADHEAD

There are plenty more where he came from LOCKED UP in prison for stealing & buying drugs. Maybe we should be giving out CITIZENSHIP awards in prisons all over America.

If we recruited where UT does we could keep the award at home.

re: The blasting of Cedric Benson is ridiculous.....

Hey dude...look at the Doak Walker Award web-page...Cedric Benson arrested twice in only 4 years while at shameful "FLUNKEE U" in Austin (see football graduation rates released this week)....certainly does not deserve the award!

Doak Walker Award:
"The prestigious Doak Walker Award was created in 1989 to recognize the nation's premier running back for his accomplishments on the field, achievement in the classroom and citizenship in the community. It is the only major collegiate football award that requires all candidates to be in good academic standing and on schedule to graduate within one year of other students of the same classification."

Benson arrested on drug, alcohol charges

CEDRIC BENSON ARREST #1

AUSTIN (AP) - University of Texas running back Cedric Benson faces misdemeanor marijuana and alcohol possession charges after being arrested in his hometown of Midland over the weekend.

Midland police said Monday they arrested the Big 12 freshman of the year about 2 a.m. Saturday after responding to a call about loud music at an apartment.

Benson, 19, was charged with possession of marijuana under 2 ounces and drug paraphernalia and being a minor in possession of alcohol. He was released from the Midland County Central Detention Center after posting $1,365 bail that morning.

If convicted on the marijuana possession charge - a Class B misdemeanor - Benson faces up to a $2,000 fine and six months in jail.

The paraphernalia and minor in possession of alcohol charges are Class C misdemeanor offenses and carry up to a $500 fine each.

Melanie Robinson, 20, also was arrested on the same charges and was released after posting bail, said Midland County Sheriff Gary Painter.

Texas coach Mack Brown, who said he has talked to Benson, said he couldn't comment on the arrest and charges but called Benson "a great young man who we've really enjoyed having in our program."

"One thing we have really prided ourselves on in our program is our family atmosphere and this will be handled within our family," the coach said.

Benson starred at Midland Lee High School where he was a high school All-American and led the Rebels to three consecutive state championships. Midland is about 350 miles northwest of Austin.

Midland police said they didn't know who Benson was until he was booked at the jail. In his jail mugshot, a somber-looking Benson is still wearing his signature dreadlocks hairstyle.

"We weren't targeting him or anything," Sgt. Dale Seago told the Midland Reporter-Telegram.

"Nobody really knew who was who."

Initially, Benson and Robinson resisted letting Officer Jeff Handley into the apartment, said Midland police spokeswoman Tina Jauz.

Handley eventually was allowed inside and found alcohol and marijuana.

"The marijuana was in a couple of places," Jauz said.

She said she didn't have further details on what was found.

CEDRIC BENSON ARREST #2

Other criminal matters: Texas senior running back Cedric Benson was sentenced to eight days in jail after pleading no contest to misdemeanor criminal trespassing for forcing his way into an Austin apartment in 2003. But due to crowding at the jail and credit for good behavior, he will likely only spend a fraction of that time - if any - behind bars.

Look, if there's a good running back playing in Texas (not necessarily from Texas - Adrian Peterson is a Texan), he's going to get it. Remember Reggie Cobb from Rice? Nice player, but the best in the nation? Hardly.

Hey IPP, Christian values, morality, and holding each other to higher standards have changed. If Charles Manson could run a 4.4, someone would sign him up, and if Jeffrey Dahmer could hit a three pointer, they would dig him up. But the important thing is Keep Fighting the Good Fight!

Someone?

I bet Manson would look good in Burnt Orange!

No wait a minute, aren't jail coveralls orange anyway?

It would be a perfect fit!

There are good citizens who are stoners...they don't get caught. Benson did, Williams didn't.

Why can't the award be taken away from these guys? The players need to know that there are consequences for their off-field actions. In fact, when a coach learns that one of his players is doing drugs, he should put him on suspension, send him to rehab, and only after he has successfully finished rehab and entered a 12-step program will he be allowed to play again. Coaches need to help clean-up these guys before they send them to the pros or into the real world.

BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!

For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.

I think once the award started to gain some momentum, and took on a more national feel, when it went from Gerald Lively / SMU / etc. to a bigger / national award, it lost A TON of its special feel / respectability.....welcome to the BIG TIME, fellas....long live Ramon Flanagan.

There are some scathing letters to the editor, in today's Morning News.
Most of them referring to the Evil Empire. aka.... UT!
