maybe if we hadn't spent all the practice time developing 3 QBs instead of focusing on one starter are QB might be more seasoned.

Ahhh, but you are assuming there was a legimate effort to develope three as opposed to two. By all means, if that is the mickey mouse offense we are going to run, then Phillips should be doing it. Whne you think about it, the only time the ball moved, it was the same offense that Phillips ran the last five games of 2003. Talk about progress!!

I couldn't really hear the playing from where I was, but if they were making sound out of their instruments when the ball was snapped, it was illegal. This is also why the mustang band doesn't do the continuous playing/get soft during the snap thing very often - it's technically illegal. You guys would be rightly pissed if we got called for a penalty because the band was doing that.

Plus, the athletic department has told the band to NOT PLAY until the ball is snapped whether it is our team or the other team. I think the rule states that the band can not play when the opposing team has possession. I think it is OK to play when your team has the ball. I have not been able to confirm this.
OUR athletic department has instructed the band to NOT PLAY until the ball is snapped, even if we have the ball.

I think most of you SMU fans have lost your minds. While the game was not pretty for either team Baylor won and SMU lost. If you are looking for someone to blame try blaming that awesome head coach of yours or as your board stated before the game your experienced defensive line that wasn't going to give up a total of 100 yards on the ground. As for the noise during the moment of silence and national athem I was sitting on the east side of the stadium and the public address announcer could not be heard. While I really liked the stadium the speaker system sucked. As for the band, if you had more than twenty members it might be possible for the band to make some noise during the game. Once again you have proven to be the biggest cry baby fans in all of college football.

Crown, as I posted earlier, the PA system is terrible, I agree. As for our band being small, (59 not 20), they still were as loud if not louder than the Baylor HS band.
Another thing, SMU does not require music majors to participate in marching band, as does Baylor. Most of the Baylor Band members are there because the have to be to get their degree.
The SMU Mustang Band is primarily a volunteer organization. Yes, we have some scholarship money, but not much compared to the tuition costs of SMU. Those kids are there because they want to be there to support the Mustangs.
Bet you didn't know these facts, did you? Now you can show your support for the Hub of SMU Spirit.

Our band has always played loud right before the snap. Its perfectly legal, you just can't perform during the actual play.
The marching band only requires music majors to be in for two years, so its not a 4 year commitment as a poster above alluded to.

PeeWee I'm glad you got to go to your first football game but those of us who have seen football for years and seen the violation called several times know otherwise. This from a recent article entitled "Illegal Use of Music-Five yards" states: "there is a NCAA penalty that no person should make an artificial noise that interferes with a player or coach's ability to call signals in a game. The penalty is a dead ball foul. However, a coach or player must make a complaint to the official" Nobody is saying that it affected the outcome of the game or claiming we were robbed by the officials-but simply that indeed it was a violation of NCAA rules-one that has been called on several occasions over the years.

FIRST:
You are totally wrong Htown bear. You can not play before the ball is snapped. You can play loud during the play (after the snap). Once the offense comes to the line of scrimmage, you must stop playing. Stallion clears that up in his post. It can not interfere with signals, so playing before the ball is snapped and after the offense is on the line, interferes with the QB's signal calling. A VIOLATION!!
SECOND:
I don't see the word four (4) in my previous post. All I said was that music majors are required to be in the marching band. Let me think now. Is a 2 year requirement a requirement? STUPID BEARS!!!
If you are going to make references to a post, please, please read the post and understand it before making the reference.

You must not have witnessed the actions of Texas Tech fans in the same vicinity last year.

From where I sat in Ford Stadium, the Mustang Band was just as loud - during the appropriate times! - as the Baylor Band. At least ours can get dressed for a performance. What's up with the t-shirts and khaki pants and tennis shoes? No money available for a wardrobe?

I understand that the rest of the schools in the Big 12 call it "The T-Shirt Band".
I will say I did enjoy the Queen-themed half-time perfomance.

As was mentioned earlier, it's very difficult to do this when we're not supposed to be playing. The 701 times was back in the day when you could play and play and play, and it not matter. Nowadays, there are those certain restrictions.
Also, the new band director is an old Mustang Band Alum. I haven't particularly talked in great length to him, but I'm sure he is just as dedicated as the rest of us.
Besides, if we played nonstop, I know that VirginiaPony person would get pissed since we played our fight song when we were losing, which is a good portion of the time anyways.

Would be nice if we had a band that could play that loud. So tired of our band fielding 60 people. I was on the west side of the stadium and anytime our band would start playing.. the Baylor band would drown them out. Why doesn't our band join the school of music making it easier for kids to play in the band?

Here is a shocker for you. Anybody that plays an instrument as SMU can join the Mustang Band. As I posted earlier, it is primarily a volunteer organization.
In all actuality, people from the music school can join the Mustang Band, but the professors in the music school discourage their participation. That's what I said, the music school DISCOURAGES music majors from playing in the marching band. So putting the Mustang Band in the music school would completely distroy this organization. It was tried 10 years ago. The music school did not want the band and the band did not want the music school. End of story.
