"The Jewel"? Is there a story behind that nickname?

Yes there is, but I doubt that Sterling even knows about this nickname.

Contrary to people believing our large right tackle resembles the blonde pop artist with a mangled grill, "Jewel" was given by teammates in the summer of 1999 when Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine labeled Sterling the jewel of the incoming freshman class.

And what do we have for the winner, Johnny?

Brad Kieschnick will be better as a redshirt freshman than Danny Murphy was a few years ago. And Murphy did a great job.

It will be nice to have an accurate kicker with a powerful leg. I say MacMurtray will have a breakout year.

Not to take anything away from McMurtray, he is definetly the most talented kicker we have had in recent years.
But, he seems to struggle with the mid-range shots, 35 yds. (45 yd. kick) and in.
However, get him down the middle of the field on anything from 45 yds to 60 yds. and he will split the uprights.

Just curious where did you obtain all this vast knowledge,Mac has only kicked in the fall and spring games and I do not think he has missed yet on field goals. The only miss I remember at all is the extra point in the spring game with the bad hold.

This knowledge comes from having seen him at practice. From the stands, it might have looked like he made all of them but not from behind the goal posts.

Ryan Mentzel - he'd better be good.

Maverick,Mac was 7 of 7 in the fall scrimmages and 6 of 6 in the spring scrimmages, are you looking at his warm-ups and his practice kicks and if so, is this where you base your opinion on. That's wrong, I doubt very few skill players are 100% in warm-ups, the games are what counts.

If you are reading stats, then I will except your argument on the grounds that you were misinformed - although wrong. Maybe you should call the video coordinator and take a look at the "game" film.
I never said that Mac was not a good kicker, in fact I believe I said he was the best that we had in recent years.
However, Mac does have problems hitting some of the mid range shots, otherwise, he would have kicked ahead of Crowley.
Again, Mac is the best long distance kicker I have seen in the past five years. And the reason for this is because he keeps the ball low enough that it can cut through the wind.

D.D. Lee showed flashes last year. This year he will break out and really turn heads.
