Virgil's is pretty dependable, I've always liked that place. Blue Smoke on the other hand, I found fairly sucky. Their "fried bread" appetizer was tasty, but everything was overpriced/mediocre and the place was full of people who have undoubtedly never eaten BBQ before, and are used to dining at Balthazar. If any of you transplanted Texans are not afraid of NC-style pork BBQ, Brother Jimmy's is an excellent choice. That is if you can stand the noise. And their waitresses are slammin hot.
And NavyCrimson, I believe you're talking about Dallas BBQ, right across from EJ's Luncheonette. There's probably about 12 of those in NY. Their entrees are reasonably priced and their clientele is decidedly ghetto, which is always a good sign when looking for quality barbecue. When I was at NYU I'd order their Half Chicken meal every single day. Good eatin!
The tex-mex question is a puzzler. I would say MaryAnn's, but I freaking hate that place. My wife and I both got food poisoning there. There's a lot of "high-fallutin" Mexican that is quite good (Mexican Radio, Cilantro, Rosa Mexicano), but I'm coming up blank on tex-mex.
