Get a grip...

Just found out about this site, and saw the postings about Wesleyan. Some of you in this thread are trying way too hard to stir up some sort of controversy. Well, I graduated from Wesleyan, am now about to graduate from SMU law, and am the son of the guy quoted in the story, and I can assure you that he was making a joke. My dad and Mr. Turner are friends. Friends kid each other sometimes. Get over it. He knows that SMU really does have a football team, I promise.

And for the record, while the Wesleyan campus isn't as nice as SMU's (few are), it's not a dump. It's actually gotten a lot better since I graduated (in 1996) and it wasn't bad at all then.

To DanFreibergerForHeisman: SMU has exactly four NCAA national championships...three in track and one in golf. Is that what you meant by plenty? Better question: Is puffery (about someone else's accomplishments, I should add) how you get your self-confidence?

And as for Fee's comments that he could have graduated from Wesleyan in 2 years with his ACT scores, I'd make fun of him for such an asinine remark, except I realize that he was making a joke. Well, either that, or he's not smart enough to have scored as high as he claims.

Finally, to SMULLET: No thanks. You guys stay where you are and keep kicking the crap out of TCU. Wesleyan thanks you. :D
at least Turner didn't laugh at the joke. That's a start, right? He DOES care, right??
Yeah, he cares.

I was surprised how animated he got at an SMU women's basketball game. He groaned at the missed shots, cheered the good plays, commented on all the action - sounded like a real fan - not some suit who knew needed to be there for appearances.

I think he gets it and would like to kick some a** on the field with our football team.

Actually SMU has a football crown in 1936. Yep, that 70 year old trophy we hang our hat on. But I see your point. Some people on this board wouldn't know a joke if it slapped them upside the head...which would be funny in itself....

Football championship?

JT...I looked it up on the NCAA website before I wrote it: http://www.ncaa.org/champadmin/champs_listing1.html

Minnesota won the 1936 NCAA championship (and the 1934 and 1935 as well). http://www.sportsline.com/collegefootball/story/2554072

If these sites are incorrect, or if maybe there was a shared championship or something, somebody ought to make sure the sites are corrected. Especially the NCAA site.

There is no such thing as a NCAA championship in football. The NCAA does not award a championship for that sport.

Please, I would rather argue whether or not it was a joke (of course it was) than argue whether or not it was a National Championship. We know it was and others say it was not. End of arguement.

Has the NCAA ever actually crowned a football champion? I thought it was always just by poll, and that led to lots of different national champions especially in the thirties. (which is why TCU claims one of our championship years as their own, despite the fact that we beat them that year)

"He knows that SMU really does have a football team, I promise. "

Duh...no [deleted]. That's the point.

Right...so when he said that they didn't have a football team it was a ...(follow along with the class) ... JOKE.

Look man, there's nothing wrong with a little dig about the fact that SMU has sucked in football for the last 20-something years in football (in those years where we've actually HAD football). It's actually knid of humorous. But that's the rub, see? You won't find a sense of humor among the SMU-does-no-wrong sunshine contingent on this board, so save your breath.

He absolutely cares. He's as into the games as any fan we have. Definitely not "just a suit."

There are four teams that claim the 1935-36 National Championship. Some polls favored Minnesota, some polls favored SMU, some polls favored Stanford, and some polls favored TCU. Our other National Championship was in 1982. At least one minor poll put us at #1. So that was enough for me to claim it. So what if AP and UP gave Joe Pa a charity vote.

So the most correct statement would be that SMU has never won an outright national championship in football.

There has never been an "Official" D-1 Football National Championship, so no one has really won an outright national championship. The BCS is trying to establish their's as the "Official" championship since there is actually a game between #1 & #2, but those rankings are still determined by something other than an actual playoff like you have in every other national championship determination. Thus you have the BCS National Championship. In earlier years, it was the such and such national championship and in some of the very early years of football, there were multiple outfits coming up with their "national championship" team.
