For Us Outsiders, who is the Dallas Good Ol' Boy Candidate?

Any chance we'd go after Josh Pastner (sp?), the Arizona assistant? He has dominated the Houston recruiting area and has obviously gotten plenty of experience under one of the coaching greats.
I think SMU can still be viewed as a good stepping stone program where a young coach with potential can come in, turn it around fairly quickly and then go get his big time DI job. I think we'd have more success looking for a coach trying to move up, rather than one we think would be around SMU for the long haul -- I'm not really sure there is anyone out there interested in staying around for good...other than Tubbs.

Pastnor from Arizona would be an inspired hire. This guy helped to run Houston Hoops AAU program while in high school. He was offered D1 assistant jobs when graduating high school and instead went to Zona on a basketball scholarship (unbelievably smart move by Olson, who got a coach without the NCAA regulations attached) when he became the fastest Arizona player (in any sport) in history to receive his degree and got his masters while still playing. He is the second assitant at the ripe old age of like 28 and happened to win a national title. This would be a genius move because he has ties to Texas, but instead we will get some caoching retread. Here is his bio

Hey East, don't be so quick to dismiss the idea that Frisco and Joker are mentioning here -- this kid was whispered as a dark horse candidate two years ago. Yes, he's young, but he has a rep as an unbelievable recruiter and a razor-sharp X's-and-O's guy. He's young, but I wouldn't be opposed to it.
Rise up, Mustang Nation!
Go SMU!
Go SMU!
I think SMU should hire Billy Tubbs. Minimize the admin task of name changes on doors, directories, etc. Some guy could get his penny back. Local sports shows could pull out some old fake 'Billy' routines, keeping them from working too hard - not that they would anyhow. And, B. Tubbs wouldn't get hired by a bigger school if he won the NCAA. It's the efficient move. It's PeopleSoft, i2 & SAP all rolled into one.
Long live Thomas Sowell!

I don't think an area HS coach is the way to go. I don't care how good they are at the HS level, and don't care to think that they could recruit Dallas area kids, because neither will probably matter. I'd just assume nominate myself (If anyone from the search committee is reading: I played b-ball in 9th grade, and averaged 12.1 pts and 5.7 rebs).
Go after a coach that has been in a weaker conference that has showed that they can win, maybe even made a tourney appearance or something, and give him the job.

I think Pastner would be a good hire but not what we want here at SMU.. He is very well connected to Houston and has signed some of the top players from Houston but we have to realize he is at Arizona, the name recruits itself... How many of Lute's assistants have been a proven winner as a head coach? I think people get to these elite programs and sign players but if you are someone like Lute who puts many players in the NBA kids are going to go there!

The only one that comes to mind is Kevin O'neill who was with Olson from 86-89 at Arizona.
