I think this is a good move on Orisnis part. I am an Evans backer but from what I have read on this board too many people would have felt that Orisin was a Turner puppet if he hired Evans. So, Orsini goes out and finds a high profile guy that could possibly do very well if given the opportunity. One of two things happen. Doherty accepts and we have a high profile coach (future to be determined). Or, Doherty declines, and as stated in the article, Evans is pursued (and hopefully hired) and no one can accuse Orisini of being controlled by Turner. Hopefully if Doherty is hired he can make the impact that many of you think he will. Evans had already done it in the past, so I guess time, and of course acceptance of the position, will tell.

I don't know. Maybe he wants both, but I'd be willing to bet a major facilities upgrade is part of the hiring process.

i don't doubt that he wants changes to the model as well, but I guarantee you he is demanding upgrades to facilities before he comes here. Our basketball facilities are a joke. It doesnt take a Carolina background to see that.

Doherty is a fine candidate, but i think Evans was the better choice regardless of who got him to come here. Is the result what matters or some AD saving face? We apparently don't care about our university saving face with a huge part of the local basketball community.

Doherty...

Would be a great hire, I know he can recruit. He can take SMU to the NCAA tournament very soon, great offer, hopefully he accepts. GO PONIES!

I assume Doherty will get the standard 4 year contract from SMU right and 2 years to succeed right? No excuses.

I hope he takes it.....it is not the same old same old hire for SMU.

Hopefully SMU will want him bad enough to make the changes that are needed. Sure we don't know if the changes are going to happen, but at least Doh is trying to get the ball rolling - Which might be something that other coaches would not put their foot down on.

It is not as much the AD saving face as it would be pleasing those from whom the facility improvements funds come. Politics, politics politics. But I must say, when this fiasco began, I would not have dreamed we could have even gotten interviews with Evans or Doherty with our recent history. Maybe, just maybe, this is a positive step.

Is Doherty that much of a coup for us? He had to go to Florida Atlantic just to get a job. We better hope we can attract him away from FAU or else we really do have big problems.

If Turner had been a big-time basketball player, could he have transfered to SMU from his junior college?

I dunno, he might think if he has close to a 20 win season next year at FAU that he can jump over smu to a bigger program. But if we are paying him a lot more than FAU than that gamble might not be worth him staying at FAU to find out....

From a purely sunshine outlook, I kind of look at FAU like payment for past sins. He is coming back and on the way up. If you do not look at it that way, and if he accepts, you are going to be miserable for a long time. At least this way I can be happy until the first tipoff.

Some people are just naturally skeptical which is not necessarily a negative trait, but IF Doherty accepts this job it is a WIN for SMU. As I have posted previously Doherty will not take this job unless he is absolutely convinced that the University is committed to winning basketball. He knows that leaving after 1 year at FAU will be frowned upon so his stay at SMU will not be short so he has to be very comfortable that SMU is a place he can stay at and succeed. Now again IF he accepts we all win because it will mean we'll get better facilities and improvements in the program and a greater overall committment by the University. That is a win so some who are not happy can at least be satisfied in knowing that our program will be stronger. Also, Doherty will get at least a 5 year deal and a heckuva lot longer than 2 years to prove himself. I know for Tubbs that stinks, but unfortunately that's how it went down.

YES he is quite the coup. He is a former coach at UNC and ND. He was a fromer Coach of the Year. He is a household name recognized by easily over 50% of college basketball fans. If you don't think that is a big deal for SMU then you are crazy. I must admit, he's not the "coup" your boy Jimmy Tubbs was though. Hate to see us take such a large step back at the caliber of coaches we are offering jobs to.
