I will continue to withhold judgment on Ganaway. There are hundreds of 2A and 3A backs that have put up huge numbers over the years and never touched the field. But I think he deserves the chance after consecutive years of being essentially 2A Player of the Year.

I'm wondering what Blake Warren's numbers were like at Arp. I think they were like 20-0 his last two years in HS, and usually won by the score of a whole bunch to not very much (49-0, 52-6, etc). I could be wrong, but I remember them having teams like that, and he would've had to have been the reason why.

He's been an asset to SMU, but not a game changer. Unless you're counting fumbles.

well it's not like this is a complete shock. We all saw this coming, whether or not we believed it. Stallion is right about the 2A factor, but that said, Gannaway seemed like an impact type of player. But putting up the numbers he did, I cant blame him one bit for wanting to stay at running back. If we only offered him as a safety and the kid wants to stay at running back, who's to stop him???

I don't think it is completely fair to dog Terrance for not "honoring his commitment", if in fact he really is not doing so. Terrance verbally committed to SMU as a 17 year-old, after his junior season in which he rushed for over 2,400 yds and 22 TD's, and was named AP 2A Offensive Player of the Year. Terrance knew SMU was recruiting him as an "athlete", with hopes of using him as a safety. In 2006, as a senior, Terrance backed up his performance as a junior with 2,815 yds rushing and 36 TD's. Even after all of that, SMU still wants him as a defensive player AND plans on red-shirting him in '07. Then you have 2 other C-USA schools jump on board and offer him with a chance to compete for playing time as a freshman at the running back position. What would you do?

I blame SMU if they do indeed lose Terrance. And, there are no guarantees. Terrance my be a huge flop as a RB, but I think I would sure be willing to at least give him a shot.

A couple of other tidbits of info: Terrance carried the ball right around 850-900 times in his 3 year high school career. Durable? He missed ONE practice his sophomore year. Never missed a game or part of a game. Dependable? Throughout those 850-900 carries over 3 years, Terrance fumbled the ball 5 times. That is pretty durable and dependable.

So, PLEASE do not fault Terrance for looking out for his own best interests. It is his future that is at stake, not SMU's, UH's or Rice's. With all of that said, if I had my choice, Terrance would be carrying the ball for the Ponies for the next several seasons.

Oh, by the way, he is a pretty good safety, too. Not sure how many tackles he had, but he had plenty and he picked off 6 passes in 12 games this year.

Per Warren's recruiting write-up:
63 receptions for 1,098 yards and 12 touchdowns, 2 punt returns for touchdowns, 2 kickoff returns for touchdowns

All right, Terrance knew what SMU was recruiting him for...and he committed. Well, I hope for his sake he isn't getting sucked in with a bait and switch routine. SMU was being honest with him...are the others? Getting a redshirt year is one of the best things that can happen for a freshman. It lets him ease into the higher level game rather than just thrown in and..."good luck." This is especially important for someone coming out of a 2A program. As an "athlete", he would still have had a chance to play RB at SMU, but that is not one of our recruiting priorities right now. I wish him well, but I am still disappointed he didn't honor his commitment...but then I am an SMU fan and biased in that respect.

I see your point, but I don't totally agree. I guess my take on the whole situation is that he shouldn't have verbally committed to anywhere until after his senior year.

I agree if he wants to play RB and SMU isn't offering that opportunity then he has proven he deserves that opportunity. This is one of those occassions when I actually think a decommitment is justified IF IN FACT THE FACTS AS PRESENTED HERE ARE ACCURATE. I don't blame the kid at all.

Actually it is pretty scary anytime a 17 or 18 year old commits to doing anything.

I went ahead and registered here since my school has become a big topic on this board.

The insinuation that Rice is baiting and switching is disingenuous at best. We didn't recruit any RBs last year. Quinton Smith is a senior, and his backup has a career total of only 6 carries. The competition for that spot will be wide-open, and I'm sure that our coaches will play the best player regardless of classification.

Anything can happen before signing day. It's really not unusual for recruits to switch commitments. I doubt y'all complain when one switches to your school.

I don't blame him either if he was getting offers to play RB. I just don't understand why SMU wouldn't give him the opportunity to compete at that position. With his numbers he should have also been given the chance to play his fresham year with the caveat that if he wasn't better than what we already have, he would be redshirted (most likely scenario for any true freshamn). This looks like another Bennett screw up, but as the sunshiner's mantra goes, "We don't know what the coaches know".

You and Bennett couldn't be more correct about that. I am willing to bet if one of us coached at SMU we probably wouldn't even win a game considering Bennett couldn't manage to win one in 2003. It is his supperior coaching that has risen our program to its lofty status in his 5 year tenure. 17 and 41 is it???

I talked to Terrance tonight. I didn't really ask him too much about any kind of commitments, but we did have a good long talk. It seems the Big 12 has entered the picture in the form of Iowa State. According to Terrance, SFA was recruiting him and the SFA coach has some ties to Iowa St. and turned their coach on to Terrance. Iowa St. has offered him and he is supposed to go for a visit within a couple of weeks. I look for a few other Big 12 schools to become interested now.
