Well according to that it's not Houston Nutt. He went to Okie State.
Not Dennis Franchione either, he went to Pittsburg State in Pittsburg, Kansas
Tommy Bowden went to West Virginia, so not him.
Terry Bowden also went to West Virginia, so not him.
Ty Willingham went to Michigan State, so not him.
Hmmm...

Under what circumstances could this possibly be? How could the news leaking out early possibly hurt the guy AND cause him to back out?

Not Charlie Weis, he went to Notre Dame.
Bill Callahan went to Illinois Benedictine College (what?), so it's not him.
Bill Doba went to Ball State University, so it's not him.
Jim Grobe went to University of Virginia, not him.
Joe Tiller went to Montana State, so it's not him.
Kirk Ferentz went to the University of Connecticut, so it's not him either.
I'm running out of names.

Can someone just make an excel spread sheet check list and just figure this out based on what we have been told? It can't be that hard, can it?

The site has been updated and now says "Hint:
The top candidate is a head coach at a BCS school with a disenchanted fan base â€" and it’s not an obvious choice. He also has ties to the state, having gone to college in Texas as well as a having a coaching stop or two in-state. This candidate also has prior NFL experience. "

Maybe this is just a royal chain-yanking.

92000 at Alabama's Spring Game. I don't think the fan base is disenchanted, even with the loss to Miss. State. Give them another year before being disenchanted. It ain't Applewhite.
Not Christenson either.
Know what? I'll tell you who it is. See the thread with the guy's name as the title.

Paul Johnson went to Western Carolina, so it's not him.
Phillip Fulmer went to the University of Tennessee, so it's not him.
Dan Hawkins went to U. of California-Davis, not going to be him.
Ralph Friedgen went to Maryland, so it's not going to be him.
Karl Dorrell went to UCLA, so it's not going to be him.
Who is it!?!
