Bowden is not even on the LONG list, so forget about him. When again was the last time he coached? There is a reason for that.
The reason being that he went into broadcasting and wouldn't even take an interview all these years.
Broadcasting games for a bunch of years sure didn't do [deleted] Vermeil any good, did it?
I too am hoping Orsini works his magic and hires someone that will make people all over the country go: "wow....how did they do that?....better look out for SMU......they will soon be back in the mix".
I appreciate TheRealTruth's passion for excellence and refusing to accept less. I sure hope TheRealTruth is right and this is a very different hire than the last few. However if it is Krag, well I suppose it will be an improvement over what we have and I will support him and hope for some improvement. Heck even if a guy only wins 7-8 games a year for a couple of years....SMU would come to life and seem like a different place.
Can't accept Krag or anyone for that matter that is a no name or not a proven winner at the highest level. The problem I invision is that someone like Krag will eventually get lucky and get us to a toilet bowl... then we think we're back, Krag heads to an SEC school, SMU hires Nebraskas Offensive Cord, and we're back to square one. Bottom Line: I don't want to patch the problem, I want fundamental change.
A Bowden type Hire does 3 important things:
1. Tells the Country, Media, and Recruits that SMU isn't F-ING around anymore.
2. Shows that SMU has a commitment to Excellence, not just average play and that we want to be a MAJOR despite our conferance.
3. Increase the national profile of the school and make SMU more of a National University. I mean it would be pretty cool (despite your politcal views) to have the Bush Library, a Top 25 Football team, and Top Basketball team all at once.
I don't care whether people like sports or not but Football is the ambasador of your school in the 21st century. It's important to have a winner in that spot and not a truck driver.
Insane Pony, I just hope you're right. I mean let me tell what has pissed me off more then anything. I've been living in the north east for the last several years and I would say there is about a 15% chance someone has heard of SMU. The sad part is, most have heard of TCU and you know what, it's not because TCU is a better school. In fact we all know TCU is nothing more then a collection of Bomb shelters on a campus. No, the reason people know of TCU is because of their recent success of a football team. It's given them major national exposure. So, hopefully Orsini does sees this.

All of these reasons are why we won't hire Bowden.

While I like your passion, life is not black and white. What's to say that if Bowden comes here he doesn't leave the first time a big program comes after him. You are assuming that all the big names would stay here long term and all the up-and-comers would leave at the first opportunity. While I wouldn't be thrilled with Kragthorpe either, he would be a step in the right direction. Once we get to consistently winning 8 games a season we can attract better talent and a Chris Petersen might actually consider moving from a Boise State to SMU. Every coaching hire a university makes is extremely important. That said, I agree that it would behoove SMU to hire a lightning rod coach to step up its recruiting efforts.
