It is my understanding that a coach is hired to win games. Maybe that's just a cultural thing though...

To paraphrase noted bigot Malcom X: I'll take wins - by any means necessary.

"The day that the SMU takes an uncompromising step and realizes that within his rights, when his own wins are being jeopardized, to use any means necessary to bring about his wins or put a halt to those losses, I don't think he'll be by himself."

"We declare our right on this earth...to be a top 25 team, to be respected as a top 25 team, to be given the rights of a top 25 team in this conference, on this earth, in the NCAA, which we intend to bring into existence by any means necessary."

That is the end goal, yes, but if you think that is the sole responsibility of the head coach, which was my point, you are a fool.

SO will do the best that he can to find the best available replacement. Now, we as fans, have the responsibility of keeping our fans hopeful that things are changing for the better.

Agreed. Despite the pain of the last six years, all the loses and frustration which preceded his tenure, I still would to thank Phil for this efforts and support for his players.

As coach he deserved this exit. As a gentleman, he deserves our thanks for trying to do it the right way. It just wasn't enough.

All the best, Phil.

Ah yes, well, in that case he was excellent at kissing babies and smiling. As for actual coaching, see my earlier comment.

The team was prepared for this game and played their [deleted] off. Neither the team nor the coaches quit and if you can't see that then you are mentally blind. Take your sour grapes elsewhere. There is no doubt in my mind that PB is not HC material, but you cannot accuse him of not trying. Exactly how many coaches having been fired would make the effort he and his staff made to keep on trying. Sure they are trying to find their next job...wouldn't you. He is gone let him go in peace.

Nothing like a coach averaging 9.67 losses per season. However, he was a real nice guy.

None on this post are saying his coaching abilities don't require some sort of discussion. The majority are saying "PB, thanks for making those kids better people, not winners on the field. You tried but couldn't it. We appreciate the effort."

I blame Turner, for not replacing Copeland sooner.

Now I completely agree with that. He was a cocky bastard that cared more about his golf game and filling his Mangino sized tummy!!

Very well put. To this day, I bet he would treat all of us kindly, not like
Fran has been. I agree, let him go in peace.

One other thing about PB that I haven't seen mentioned, in public he always stood by his players and knew that the buck stopped with him. Contrast that to Leach at Tech that blamed his players for some of their problems during the past couple of years. Night and Day!

What is classy about someone who takes players with enough talent to compete in Conference USA and cannot win even a game? What is classy about a coach who frequently loses his composure during a game and gets unsportsmanlike calls against him? What is classy about a coach who consistently gets out-coached by the opponent? Yes, today was a good effort. But were you at Ford last week? What is classy about a coach and staff who are so concerned about finding their next jobs that they fail to get their team ready for a game in their present job?

Phil Bennett may be a lot of things. But, classy is not one of them.

Phil Bennett does do his job. Just because he couldn't get the W's here, doesn't mean he wasn't doing his job. Class does not come from on-the-field performance. He ran across the field to confront Mike Leach, a guy who is known to run up the score, because he felt Leach wasn't winning with class. I wouldn't ever say Phil frequently gets unsportsmanlike penalties against him. He may get caught up in the game because he cares so much and let his emotions get the best of him, but it's not because he's classless.

I would not call going 1-11 doing your job. I think going 1-11 is very very far from doing your job. Especially when half of your losses are games where you were winning in the 4th quarter. I'll coach SMU and win 1 out of 12 games. That is not doing your job. That is being complete a sshole of a coach.
