Jones will give his assistants donation

University of Hawai'i football coach June Jones will pay it forward.

A group of Hawai'i business leaders and UH supporters have pledged more than $100,000 as a gesture to thank and support Jones.

Jones, in turn, said he will give the entire amount to his assistant coaches and to improving the athletic department's deteriorating facilities.

"I want the money to go where it's needed," Jones said.

The nine-assistant coaching staff has received one across-the-board raise in nine years. UH's athletic facilities, which include a condemned Cooke Field infield, were sharply criticized during the Nov. 23 national telecast of the UH-Boise State game.

"I think that says an awful lot about the kind of guy June is," defensive line coach Jeff Reinebold said. "That's a window into June. He's very generous to make a gesture like that."

Jones is in the final seven months of a five-year contract, in which he is paid $800,016 plus bonuses annually. Half of his salary is paid through donations.

Last week, the group, led by retired First Hawaiian Bank chairman Walter Dods, sought donors to each contribute $2,000 as a show of support for Jones. As of yesterday, the group reportedly received $114,000 in pledges.

"It's an awful strong statement by the people who recognize what he's done here," Reinebold said. "Really, when you consider everything, he's probably done the greatest coaching job of all time. You compare our budget to the budgets of schools we compete against, and you see he's done an amazing job. Look at the facilities and budgets he's had to overcome."

More importantly, Reinebold said, Jones saved the football program. In 1998, UH was 0-12 under Fred vonAppen. The next year, Jones' first as UH head coach, the Warriors finished 9-4, which, at that time, was the greatest turnaround in NCAA football history.

Under Jones, the Warriors have had seven winning seasons in nine years, qualifying for six postseason bowls. This year, the 12-0 Warriors are the only Division I-A team to produce an unbeaten regular season.

"Everybody talks about the great job the South Florida coach did in building a program," Reinebold said. "But June resurrected a program. If the program was a patient in the hospital, they would call the priest to give the last rites. He took it off life support. He breathed life into it, and gave it an identity. (IS THIS WHAT SMU NEEDS?)

"When you're down, it's hard to get back up. Everyone is reminding your recruits how bad you are. You get slammed in every possible way. To take all of that stuff, and then build is very difficult. Look at all of the teams he's beaten â€" Purdue, Arizona State, Washington, Alabama, Michigan State. He's beaten teams from every major conference except the ACC. And he's doing it with essentially a Division II budget and facilities. That's amazing."

yeah look at this quote from that article:

"ESPN came down and criticized us for the kind of facilities we have," Chang said.
“We have players that are trying to recruit their friends to come over to Hawaii
and avoid the facilities because they're pretty much ashamed of it"

I wish this news about JJ hadn't come out yet. It will give the UH people, time to rally the Warrior pocket books.

Agree, I don't think SO wanted this to come out until after the game. My first thought was maybe Fran's people wanted to blow up any deal but who knows? UH may pull a Mich/LSU thing or Mich/UWV thing. Getting ahead abit. If JJ were to turn SMU around, why go to a bigger program? SMU will already be a big program at that point.

HELLO EVERYBODY! That's why Steve's been so secretive. Everyone on here til this point has acted like a bunch of anxious kids a week before X-Mas. Now we know what our potential gift is and we have to hope it doesn't get taken away.

They're not going to accomplish something in a few weeks that they couldn't get done in the past four years. Contrast the situation with Navy. Navy got the money together to pay PJ a competitive salary and certainly did not let his contract run down to the last few months.

Hawaii cannot possibly be surprised by this situation; JJ has appeared on several schools' HC lists this season, and his non-BCS team is playng in the Sugar Bowl.

Hawaii will not get their bowl money for several months after the bowl game and the school will then have a big internal fight to decide how to distribute the funds. JJ will have to make a decision on the SMU job long before Hawaii can promise JJ anything with respect to the bowl proceeds.

Hawaii's alumni, who already pick up half of JJ's salary, will probably be the source of any additional funds; however, they can't seem to get it done. Then there are the other issues: paying the assistant coaches, updating the facilities, funding the recruiting budget, etc.

June Jones would be a WOW!!!

But he should think twice before taking this job. At Hawaii he can recruit guys SMU would never consider. The guy literally recruited Colt Brennan out of a jail.

JJ could never have recruited Colt Brennan if he was at SMU.

He did not recruit Colt Brennan out of jail! Colt was in jail for seven days and then played at a junior college before going to Hawaii. He also had offers from Syracuse and San Jose State. I'm not sure that he could not have played for SMU.

I've stated all along, when you are conducting business you don't want everyone including potential competition knowing what you are thinking.

I've liked the secrecy but don't like that this is out.

While JJ is very interesting, don't think that SO doesn't have others.

Literally? Are you sure about that?

Jan. 28, 2004 - Crime date (while enrolled at CU)

Fall 2004 - Saddleback Junior College in Mission Viejo, Calif

February 2, 2005 - Syracuse renegs on scholarship offer because of conviction

June 2005 - Colt Brennan enrolls at Hawaii

Jones didn't offer a scholarship but rather a promise: to make Brennan the first quarterback selected in the NFL draft.

You really think 35,000 hits of acid (see related thread from about 3 weeks ago) and $75 will sway him one way or another?

Thanks for clarifying. I get so tired of guys using generalizations and cliches with regard to other school's recruits. A guy gets arrested once and now several ponyfans portray Brennan as having received recruiting letters/visits from June Jones while in his jail cell, playing dominoes with Bubba.
