Why does he need a team? He can show up on race day, get his front wheel as close as possible to the starting line and then go when they shoot the gun. If he gets tired, he can draft behind another team for a while. And then at the end, he can outsprint all the others to the finish line.

Isn't this the way he did it before?

I dont know the official rules to the Tour de France but I believe each rider must be associated with his or her team. I know there are team time trails in the race. maybe about 2-4 of the stages consist of them. and I know the past 7 he has won, his team was riding with him on the final day when he captured the title

Not sure if your comments were tongue in cheek, but no individual can enter. They must be on a sanctioned team by UCI traditionally. In 2008, owners and operators of the Tour, ASO, made their own selection. 21 teams typically are invited. From Wikipedia:

"As with most cycling races, competitors enter as part of a team. The race consists of 20 to 22 teams with nine riders each. Traditionally, entry is by invitation, invitations granted only to the best professional teams. The organizers recently have utilized UCI points (based upon team riders/results) to determine which teams would gain automatic entry into the tour and then typically reserve 2-4 slots to large teams or French continental teams not able to race in the tour based upon their individual team results. Each team, known by the name of its sponsor, wears a distinctive jersey, and team members assist one another and have access to a shared team car (a mobile version of pit crews in car racing)."

Not anymore. The stupid Tour organizers did away with the TTT last year or the year before. It took a great element out of the race. But you are correct that he will have to enter as part of a team. The team is, and always has been a huge part of his race tactics. I have heard hints that it will be a team of his own creation. I'd be surprised if it was a Lance Armstrong Foundation team, since I can't see them spending the non-profit resources that way. Wouldn't be surprised to see Nike as a sponsor. Trek has got to be thrilled to have him back.

EDIT: Landis needs to sit in the corner and be quiet. He's an embarrassment.

Evidently I can't spell tonight.
