We could put plaques on the wall or their names on the walls along the sidelines like the Redskins and Cowgirls do.

How about something large enough to see from in the stands, so maybe students won't be so ignorant about our previous success.

I've suggested having at least the National Championship recognized on this board before, only to be shot down and told that the banner in the atrium of the Loyd Center was enough...

Always been a big fan of Dandy Don...I thought he really got treated poorly by the Dallas (Cowboy) fans in his last two years. I wish I had a picture of half the Greenbay defense near or hanging on him just prior to that interception in Dallas' last offensive possession in the championship game held here in the Cotton Bowl.

But, I thought it is interesting that for his career at SMU he had almost as many interceptions as touchdowns, 23-25 and his completiton percentage was just barely over 60%, yet he was an All-American for two years.

Obviously the college game is very different today. Offenses and receiving talent have really changed the game--and much of it the result of those players that weren't allowed to be on the same field finally getting their opportunity in the SWC. Thank you Jerry LeVias!

I would like to see something along the facade of pressbox/luxury suites. It would read something like:

1935 National Champions

1923 1926 1931 1935
1940 1947 1948 1966 SWC Champs
1981 1982 1984

37 Doak Walker
87 Raymond Berry
75 Forrest Gregg
XX Lamar Hunt (I don't know what Lamar's # was)
23 Jerry LeVias
17 Don Meredith
19 Eric Dickerson
Cash Birdwell

Agree. But, I have a question, didn't some (minor) polls or publications name us NC in 1992?

Once again I agree with PonySoprano. A thought: SMU's heritage is highlighted with many athletes who excelled in sports other than football. Would it be appropriate to honor Jim Krebs, Payne Stewart and others with a banner (or whatever) somewhere on the concourse level at Ford? Where else could you pay tribute to all of our nationally acclaimed athletes at the same venue? Just food for thought, not a marketing guy here.

I think you mean 1982?

In 1982 the Helms poll (whatever that is) named SMU and Penn St Co-National Champions.

In 1981, the National Championship Foundation (again, whatever that is) named SMU, Pitt, Texas, Clemson, and Nebraska Co-National Champions

Bogus. AP and/or UPI or nothing. We got ripped off in '82.

SID answered it. The jersey is being retired, not the number.

And I still don't understand that. If we haven't used that jersey since 1958 doesn't that mean it was already retired?

I guess no one turned out the lights so they did not know the party was over.
