Former Miami backup quarterback Cannon Smith will play for his hometown Memphis Tigers.

Smith, who announced his plans to transfer from Miami last week, will enroll at Memphis, his father, Fred Smith, told multiple media outlets.

"Cannon decided he will play for Memphis," Smith, who is the founder and CEO of FedEx, texted to the Miami Herald.

Cannon Smith will sit out this season per NCAA rules and will have three years of eligibility remaining at Memphis.

Smith completed his only pass last season, for two yards.

He is expected to practice with the Tigers for the first time on Tuesday.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

After several years of practice, I have conditioned my sense of humor to peak with the beginning of football season. The main problem has been trying to keep it at a high level throughout basketball season also.

UPS is employee owned, so you could have a lot of potential owner's sons out there. I remember I had a next-door neighbor who was a UPS driver who had an arms dealer on his route, so he'd help himself to a box or two of merchandise and then go up to NY and sell his bounty. Then one morning at 5 a.m. ATF showed up at his door. I was living in a townhouse at the time and I heard them shout at him through the wonderfully sound proof walls. Unfortunately, the only word I heard was "fire" of the title "firearms". So, I looked out the window fearing a fire and saw a swat team with guns trained on the house. I decided to find a room out of the line of fire. No shots were fired thank goodness.
