i doubt it, baylor works their a-s-s off to give money to entice people to go there...a lot dont but they throw money at them like crazy...KU is another place, SMU is just on the bandwagon with the rest of em

Baylor gave me less than SMU. Same with everyone I've talked to regarding it.

Baylor gives money to everyone, but not as much as SMU gives. SMU gives more money, but not to as many people as Baylor gives it to.

you have to look at instate vs. out of state....SMU may be good but they still aren't ranked in the top 20 of institutions wit the best financial aid according to Princeton Review

That's probably true. I know there's some Ivy League school (Harvard? Yale?) that provides something like 100% coverage if your family makes less than $60,000 per year...that school's got to be up near the top.

Heck until the what mid 1960's Rice was free. If you got in, you went there for free. It's endowment paid everyone's tuition. I think they started charging admission to some degree to make people put some investment into their education, but they usually have had lower tuition costs than SMU. All private schools are costly. I know that UVA and William and Mary looked at becoming non-state institutions about 10 years ago and decided against it because the tuition supplements for in-state students and the tuition plans sold to in-state parents came into play. That's the other thing that I see as an estate planner. If granny has four grandkids age 3, 4, 5, and 6 and put $250,000 into 509 plans, and lives 5 years the amounts pass estate and gift tax free and when the grandkids reach age 18, they get a free education. What a deal and Obama won't change that, too many of his Harvard buddies would stop sending him Christmas cards.

They sent a letter out. It was "the smallest increase in tuition in years," which meant that it was only about an 8% increase or something laughably high like that.

Scholarships are a good thing. The great thing about SMU is that scholarships are also pretty easy to come by, and if you don't get one, financial aid tends to be more generous here than at other schools.

I think this is part of the question I asked several months ago about SMU no longer being a "cool" school among the more active and motivated Dallas-area high school seniors.

It's not just a matter of being the popular school of the moment or having a winning football team. SMU is just too astronomically expensive. It used to be within reach of most middle- to upper-middle class families, especially with some scholarships and financial aid. I'm not so sure anymore - or maybe a lot of kids and parents just get sticker shock and don't even attempt to haggle.

My first semester tuition in the fall of 1963 was $460. Times have changed.
