Yep we need the word. SMU is the little school that did. I have been moveing and have donated a bunch of stuff to UMOM. Every time I go there a bunch odf kids try to get the best stuff first. To remove Metodist is removeing history from church, Many complain about our mascot. Leave it alone. We are a Church, univerasity, a charity, a place to find home. We are libral and conservative right, and wrong at tmes. We do what we can. METHODIST needs to stay. SMU

We really need to be more sensitive to the needs of others:
Drop "Southern" as it is offensive and troublesome to other "directions"
Drop Methodist because we are concerned about how it might make other denominations and beliefs feel. (And hurt their self esteem)
I guess University can stay, but doesn't it take unnecessary shots at other types of educational franchises like Sylan Learning Center, Devry, Elkins, Beauty Schools, Boys Ranch, Trinity Valley Community College and TCU?
Maybe we could go the "University formerly known as..." a la Prince. Just make sure the new symbol can be funded by Mrs. Pickens.

Doesn't the UMC have schools in each of its jurisdictions? SMU is the South Central jurisdiction of the UMC. Duke in the SE. Boston University in the NE. Purdue in the Midwest. USC and Vanderbilt were founded by the Methodist Church, but are now independent, I believe.

Can we please change our brand to SMU? I get sick of the USA Today calling us So. Methodist or Southern Methodist. I never see TCU referred to as Tex. Christian or UCLA as Cal-Los Angeles. Your brand is everything and they need to change this more than screw with our horse.

Plenty of ignorance out there about what Methodists believe. See the Methodist Book of Discipline.
I know this was posted in jest, but I've made the argument for a long time that SMU needs to drop the Methodist affiliation or decide to be serious about the responsibilities the name implies. The outright hostility to religion in Dedman is a shock to a great many who go to the school to get a balanced view of the world. And let's just put it this way: Jesus would not have driven a BMW. Eye of the needle.

Purdue is a land grant college in Indiana, no religious affiliation, Methodist or otherwise. Northwestern was founded by the Methodists in 1850 as a college was needed in the "Northwest".
Not that is has any relevance to the discussion, but Tulsa is the largest college founded by Presbyterians.
....and so it goes.

Of course not, you can't seat thirteen in a Beemer. Unless it's one fo this euro-panel-van-types. Then maybe he would?
But certainly not at SMU. Jesus would need a full size Chevy van or a party bus to get everybody on board.
Here's one question that arises for you to ponder. Do the apostles have to call shotgun or does it always go to Paul?

I'm pretty sure the athletic department has been pushing SMU over Southern Methodist for years now, but I guess you have to be good to get your preferred identity to stick. I can't recall ever seeing "Southern Methodist" on any athletic apparel (on or off field).
