At 340 he would have to beat a GREAT athlete to be quick. Get him to 300 and then let the weight room re-model his body.
I think we could work with him.
Better material is available at this time. Athleticism, quickness, personal conditioning, personal health...etc. must be factored into an athlete's potential. It is therefore very difficult to evaluate this kid's capabilities as his weight has totally obscured his potential
Food for Thought: Perhaps our two greatest NGs at SMU were:
1. Michael Carter-a world Class Shotputter 2. Jerry Ball-a Top 100 RB in High School who lead his team to State Title Game and rushed for over 1,000 yards
You need athletes at every position including NG.

When momentum starts rolling downhill in recruiting-WATCH OUT.

Yep, these were athletes of the highest caliber from the beginning. They were not over weight projects.
I Would To Say That All The Speculations That I Am Slow Re Totally False And anybody that has seen me play this year knows that..giving the fact that yes I was 335 pounds last year slowed me down but anybody can see for a person that was 335 pounds i can move and had some athletic ability...That was my junior Film On youtube...since then i have lost 60 pounds!!and is now down to 285 pounds..i will email my senior highlight tape to anybody who wants it and you can totally see the diffrence in my speed quickness etc.

Glad to see your interest in SMU football. I am sure I speak for many when I say we would enjoy seeing your new highlights as we are in need of a solid DT. Good luck with your recruiting.
I guess it's a violation for us to directly address this recruit on the board, right?
That said, I REALLY hope Widener comes to SMU. Creating something great can only happen a few places. I would submit being a part of what's going on at SMU would be something impossible to parallel in Texas. Maybe TCU...but they're already there. Do you want to join the group that's walking out of Disneyworld, or the group that's headed in...

Gotta Say, Looking through his pictures on rivals in his most recent pictures it looks like he's cut a lot of weight. If the coaches believe in this kid, I am on board.
We really need help and depth on the D line and if RW has lost that many pounds on his way into his senior HS season, that shows his dedication. Notwithstanding his great spirit to actually come on here and address the situation personally.....I would love to see Ryland Widener in a SMU uniform busting everyones' tail in the next 4 years to come. We need him!
Ok this is my last post. At about 2:00 in this video Ryland goes 1-1 versus a 4 star OG, the #1 OG in the country, and dominates him. I hope this new information silences the critics, Ryland can be one of the pieces that continues to make our program great again.
guys, I don't know that it's cool for us to exchange emails or email addresses with a recruit. We'd love to see any videos, Ryland, and we want (NEED) a solid NG at SMU...but if someone is on this board, and you interact with a recruit, unless there's already an established relationship, not cool...
