I go back to my original question. Against which class do signees designated to replace those who quit, transfer, etc. count. IF, we were well below the 85, and no other factors were involved other than 3 players leaving, could we bring in 25 or 28?

You cannot exceed 25 for any "year"...though there are games that can be played with recruits entering early or grayshirting since they can be assigned to either year in most cases. The players transferring out do NOT give you more room under the 25 initial limit, but they do free up room in the 85 total scholarships.

In other words, players that leave are not counted towards any recruiting class. They just count towards the 85. This is just like how walk-ons who earn a scholarship after a few years in the program do not count towards the initial 25 limit and just count towards the 85.
