He will leave at the end of his contract and we will give him a warm send off, given the program's left in great shape...I think that's what most expect to happen. 25% chance he returns to Hawaii as the head coach. won't be young. maybe Rheinbold's special consultant

If JJ stays a full 8 years ad is very successful, then I for one will be satisfied. The nature of the game is contiunous coaching change. 8 years seems like a long time for a successful coach to stay at a non-AQ school.

to me and from what i have read about JJ (and his comments). Winning is important, but to him it is more about the life lessons he teaches a long the way. While most of us recognize him for his ability to win football games, I think he believes his best ability is to teach and develop young men.

When JJ decides to move on, I highly doubt it will be to coach Hawaii. The guy will have plenty of money to do the things that he wants: help people. If he stays 8 years, I will be surprised (based on the current coaching carousel in the NCAA), but he seems to be a man of his word. And unlike other coaches in the NCAA, I think he will stand by what he preaches to his players. When he decides to hang up the clip board, I expect him to spend a lot more time with his foundation..... and golfing

Doesn't JJ still have his charitable foundation with it's golf tournament in Hawaii. Could easily see him going back to his house there and continue with the charity. I think a number of administrative changes would need to occur with UH before he would accept the AD.
After what he has done at SMU and what we all hope he will do, can only wish him the absolute best after his head coaching stint.

He's 57...but looks and acts older than that.

He's been through a lot, physically. I don't see him having the energy to take over another program/challenge after SMU. Not as a head coach.

I think everyone knows we're just "renting" Coach until he returns to the islands. As long as he continues to give his full devotion to SMU while he's here, I don't see anyone having a problem with what he does once his time is finished here.

$2 mil per is pretty high "rent."

Can anyone imagine Mack Brown letting it be known he reallly missed UNC after two years at Texas?

IMHO, JJ's gone as soon as he achieves his mysterious goal for SMU. (And I'm pretty sure the goal isn't to stay here 8 years.)

Where is this eight years coming from? Did he extend his contract again or are you confusing him with Doh? JJ's original contract was for five years and the only extention of his contract I know about was for an additional two years...which means he will be gone after five more years...not six. What am I missing here?
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

It's the cheapest rent SMU the Circle of Champions will ever pay.

And to think, we could have 'rented' a hell of a lot of great football players for two million a year. Too bad we gave up on that successful model a few years ago.

If we get left out of the BCS thing...we should think about ditching the NCAA and going back to that method...

I don't know. Mr. Musachi, this thread's author, says JJ has six years left.
He's been here two. That makes eight.

Well, I believe he is wrong. Regardless, when JJ is gone he will most certainly return to his paradise...Hawaii. Just remember, it will be sooner than the title of this thread says it will be.

Seems to me he will leave once the rebuild is complete, we are stable, and a capable successor is in place and well groomed. My guess would be 2013 or 2014. It'd be great if he stays longer, but I certainly can't blame the guy. Hawaii vs. Dallas...
