Unfortunately that's not the case - graduate programs, specifically those mentioned, heavily influence the overall ranking.
Regardless, it's a great time to be a Pony and it's a great time to be a Frog - I would be honored to have a degree from either...too bad I don't.
Nobody is gonna rip this guy up one side and down the other?

Well, the rankings are flawed. It's a glorified nebulous beauty pageant.
First, the "popularity contest" is the single largest measure (last year it accounted for 22% overall) and unfortunately it's carried out amongst university officials whom generally don't know much about peer universities: The president/chancellor, chief academic officer (generally the provost), and the chief admission officer (dean of admission, chief of admissions) - they're the ones who vote! It's flawed logic - these individuals, generally university officials and to a smaller measure guidance counselors (which only account for 2.5%), have no legitimate business ranking other universities, especially with what's at stake.
Oh, as far as graduate programs go: they are weighted - while most of the weight isn't openly established, it's certainly a factor.
It's unfortunate that any prospective student would make his/her decision solely on these rankings - in a perfect world they'd be tossed out completely but...well, it's not.

Yeah, I can see that argument, too!

YOU ARE A SAFETY SCHOOL! I know it is tough for you to hear, but there it is. SMU students also apply to TCU in case they can't pass through SMU's admissions or admissions at any other decent school. It is nothing to be ashamed about - that is who and what you are.
Take solace in the fact that today you have a much better football program. We can't get players through our admissions process like you can - we tried. When your coaches recruit they don't need to worry about little things like a player's ability to read or write. That is not a priority at most safety schools like TCU. I wish SMU's administrators shared your philosophy, but they seem to care about academic reputation (just silly of them).
If it makes you feel any better, nobody really cares where you went to school years after you graduate - plus you can always lie and say, "it was much better back then."

Re: To the TCU Lurkers
TCU is a better school then Tech though - so you got that going for you....
And U.S. News is not perfect, but its the closet thing out there to a valid listing. The provost and administrators actually know what they are talking about which is why there is some weight on that.
That said - i think i'd trade our higher academic standing for a shot at the national championship - just saying....

Comeeee on you know I love SMU almost as much as TCU but that's just silly...
TCU: 14,989 applicants for 1,821 spots
SMU: 8,354 applicants for 1,329 spots

Regardless, I'll take a top100 ranking when you note that there's 4,236 "degree-granting institutions." The difference between 50 and 100 is minimal.

What are the dates for the ESPN "30 for 30" special about TCU again?
So you're proud of the fact that you have a 30 for 30 based off having your football program shut down for 2 years?
I guess bad publicity is better than none at all.
And the project including the Hawaii Bowl was just a coincidence. Thad was already going to do a film about the DP. So don't think that you're on ESPN bc of last year's success.
