Seems like it was an ongoing situation over several games, and maybe multiple seasons. Josh
didn't grow up dreaming to be a Mustang, and wanted to play pro football. He wanted a chance to be a star somewhere, and get noticed for a chance at the NFL. Seems like Cavan benched Ramon Flannigan for a few games during his senior season. He was an idiot.

In Josh's home town, we have a clear memory about how he was treated under Cavan. The issue of a good player under a bad coach vs. school loyalty is a difficult one. No one expects a player to sacrifice their prospects for a pro career under inept management. If you ever want to recruit good talent for SMU, then you had better show that the staff aids careers, not impedes them. Of course coaching matters. Without it, you can waste a lot of talent. Of course a coach looks good in proportion to the talent on the team. His coaching ability has a lot to do with the talent he can recruit. Would you have wanted to send your favorite player to play QB under Cavan? Would you want him to play QB under Bennett either?

cavan - no way
Bennett - jury is out
Difference is you could talk to Cavan and tell he was clueless - I get the exact opposite feeling from Bennett.

they hold Josh in very high esteem at Sam Houston St too where he is known as the Greatest Player in Sam Houston St. History. I'm sure he is very proud of his Sam Houston St. Letter Jacket and Diploma but he was a dismal failure at SMU despite beimg given every opportunity to succeed and ran from a second rate challenge from the Immortal Kelan Luker. Hey if you think I'm harsh go see what the fans and coaches think of him at the Insiders Arizona Cardinals website. The general consensus is that with only 3 wins this year-playing McClown for the next 3 games will guarantee Arizona the Number I pick in the NFL Draft. Now I'm starting to understand... Its also good to see he made National Headlines and Sports Center Highlites this week by making what Cardinal Fans are calling one of the biggest Bonehead Plays in franchise history(and that's saying something) when he faded back into his end zone-got spooked and thew a BACKWARD PASS to one of his OWN OFFENSIVE LINEMAN which resulted in a safety and a 36-0 deficit. Sounds very familiar. Apparently he SUCKS no matter who the coach is.

Stallion always trashes Josh because he is bitter that Josh is living proof that Stallion was DEAD WRONG about his boy Cavan.
Yeah Stallion.....Josh is no good that is why he is starting in the NFL this week.
Yeah Stallion Josh is no good thats why he was in the Senior Bowl and scored a touchdown in the Senior Bowl.
Stallion and Cavan know more than the NFL and the Senior Bowl!
Does anybody with an ounce of brain matter really think Josh would be starting a game in the NFL this week had he stayed on with the Cavan Nightmare?
I dont blame Josh a bit in bailing from Cavan which is exactly what SMU AD Copeland did not that long after Josh did.

I was DEAD WRONG? After SMU wins 3 games in two years when idiots like you said the only thing holding SMU back was Mike Cavan's coaching and motivational skills? Pal I already won that argument long ago.

Stallion, splain to me the benching of Ramon Flanigan, the SMU #1 offensive yardage production leader ever for multiple games his senior year under Cavan?

It takes two to tango, Stallion. Both coaching and talent matter. Your overemphasis, to put it charitably, on talent alone makes you look foolish. Stop clinging to half an argument.
There's simply no argument that Cavan did not have QB talent in NFL'er Josh McCown.

Hey Stallion, what are the fans/critics saying now about Josh after his first pro star?? Read your sports page, check the sports networks. You again succeed in looking foolish and misinformed.

Josh had a nice game today for his first start. ALL SMU fans should be happy for him. And, at the risk of repeating on an old issue, how could he develop confidence under Cavan when every time a pass was incomplete (even when it wasn't his fault), he was looking over his shoulder, expecting to get yanked in favor of Kelan Luker? With the talent SMU had, there was absolutely no reason to bench McCown and Flanigan. Never should have happened.

Why in the Hell should all SMU fans be happy for a traitor. To me it looks like his BONEHEAD play lost yet another game. His 35 yard interception which was returned for a TD was the difference in the Game. Has this kid ever played a game in his College and Pro career when he didn't hand the other team a TD. I guarantee he may lead the world in TDs handed the other team per number of snaps in the Modern Era Of Football. To set the record straight McCowen was benched later in the season that Bennett has benched his starter in each of the last two years. And Bennett has changed QBs more than Cavan has. MCCown was benched because they had lost about 6 in a row and he had contributed about 8-9 turnovers in two games. He would have been benched by just about every coach in America. Even then he was allowed to win back the job which he did but then jumped ship because he was afraid the Great Kelan Luker was going to steal his job. Why don't you post this crap on the Sam Houston St. message board where he will forever be known has a hero. He sucked here.

It's your opinion that he's a traitor, Stallion. Although I think you're wrong, you're entitled to it. (Actually, I find it rather humorous that you're calling someone else a traitor -- You who has publicly refused to acknowledge your love of SMU).
But your argument that McCown didn't have the talent to play at SMU is astoundingly laughable. Keep riding that dead horse. It's truly entertaining stuff.

Stallion: Just wondering...did you EVER play football at the high school, college or professional level?

The people on this board who defend a traitor suck. I question your loyalty to SMU. If any of you work for the school you should be fired. When will you jerks start putting SMU first? That means putting the school ahead of players that leave and abandon their teammates? If you jerks think Cavan was such a bad coach then go talk to your pal Copeland about it. He hired him. Again, I stress the obvious but apparently many of you have your heads where the sun does not shine. Until SMU takes the 'hand cuffs' off of the coaches and change their model, SMU will always face an uphill battle in the revenue sports. Merry Christmas.
