Re: ESPN Bowl Projections
Liberty Bowl has the right to drop the CUSA Champion, CUSA entirely and SMU in particular -and the consensus says they will. I thought that was pretty well understood although I didn't check SEC standings to see how this weeks games affected that issue. I don't see us playing in the Liberty Bowl even if we are Champions

Yes that looks like a strange happening and the CUSA fall back is the Birmingham Papa Johns Pizza Bowl game...correct? Which is all the way out to January 8, 2011 and has a much lower payout and also depends on who is playing who so the payout is a sliding scale.
Re: ESPN Bowl Projections
Fair enough. But we can't control that, and if we are voting on it, based soley on our own concerns and well-being, and that of our programs, than it ought to be the Liberty Bowl far and away.
And I admit to being optimistic, and obviously biased on the subject.

Re: ESPN Bowl Projections
UPDATE: I think for the SEC to have enough teams to fill both the Liberty Bowl and Birmingham Bowl they need 10 bowl eligible teams assuming they get two BCS teams-they have 8 right now with 2 more possible:
Tennessee has to beat Vanderbilt
Georgia has to beat Georgia Tech
Even then SMU would not be guaranteed Liberty Bowl even with a Championship. They could simply choose a 9 win UCF or 9 win Southern Miss-and June Jones would love it and head to Hawaii without complaining

Re: ESPN Bowl Projections
Uh, I would be very upset if we were passed up despite winning the conference title to play in Hawaii AGAIN. The opportunity to beat an SEC team in the Liberty Bowl would be awesome.
Back off Warchild seriously.

Our fate has already been decided should we go to a bowl. So it won't be a function of the Liberty Bowl dropping SMU. It will never have been a possibility.
Re: ESPN Bowl Projections
Now that we've done Hawaii, I'd like to see SMU in a bowl game that fans can drive to. Or at least one that doesn't require the financial and logistical commitment it takes to get to the islands. Not to mention it was Christmas Eve and we were in a recession.
Unfortunately, I don't sense as much excitement about going to a bowl this year compared to last year. Based on the turnout for the Marshall game, I'm afraid we won't travel well even if the bowl is accessible this year. Maybe the Armed Forces Bowl (i.e. Backyard Bowl) is best.
For those of you who could afford to go to Hawaii last year, consider yourself blessed. There were a lot of people fired up to finally see SMU in a bowl game who had to stay home.
Maybe our reward is getting to see SMU in a bowl game in our backyard, i.e. the Armed Forces Bowl. But half the fun of bowl games is traveling and the sense of camaraderie you get bonding with your fellow fans in a "foreign" place.
Maybe I'm spoiled. But after all those years of envying other schools going to bowl games, we finally get there and our choices are either Hawaii or our own stadium?

If you can play a bowl game in your home state and make it accessible for recruits.....
Re: ESPN Bowl Projections
I am curious:
Does anybody know why the SEC would want this? Stallion? Anybody? I see no real reason for this.

Re: ESPN Bowl Projections
If the SEC can not fill all its bowls it has been stated quite clearly by bowl and conference officials that the SEC will likely insist that the SEC team play against a BCS conference team -in this case the Big East thereby sending CUSA to Birmingham.

Re: ESPN Bowl Projections
After getting some further clarification on the strange Liberty Bowl/SEC/Conference USA arrangement, I reshuffled my C-USA lineup. If UCF wins the conference title game but gets bumped from Memphis, it will have its choice of league-affiliated bowl games, and who would turn down a trip to Hawaii? This also allows Southern Miss to play closer to home in Birmingham.
Note that if Tennessee beats Kentucky this weekend, giving the SEC a 10th bowl-eligible team, this will all be moot.
