To the Baylor guy - Ann Richards - spare us the attendance figures.

Actually Richards stayed out of it. The reports of the Governor getting involved are inaccurate, Lt. Governor Bob Bullock definitely did interject himself along with others. They did get us and Texas Tech into the B12 when it was going to be 10 teams.

To reference the Dallas Morning News on the subject and their interviews:

One of the biggest misconceptions about the breakup of the Southwest Conference was that former Texas Gov. Ann Richards used her political clout to push Baylor into the Big 12. Those close to loquacious Baylor graduate say that just isn't true.

"She just was not involved to any great degree in working that out," said Richards' former chief of staff, John Fainter. "I'd have to say she was informed, but she wasn't pounding the table or anything like that."

Bill Cryer, Richards' former spokesman, said Richards always thought it was funny that people assumed she bent over backward to help Baylor.

"I remember her chuckling about it saying, 'I can't imagine they think I would do that,' " Cryer said. "But you know how football fans are. They see want they want to see."

To quote a SA Express News article on the subject of whether BU took smu/uh/tcu/rice/(insert ticked off school here)'s spot or if they simply made 2 new ones:

"As luck and fate would have it, Texas Tech had some very powerful members of the legislature," said former Tech AD Bob Bockrath. "Candidly, if not for the influence, it'd be the Big 10 - that's taken, so some other name. I don't think Texas and A&M saw Tech and Baylor as equal partners."

As for attendance the DMN quotes former UT chancellor William Cunningham on the final spot:

The final spot came down to Baylor or TCU. Those two were the only viable choices.

"Baylor had much better attendance at football games, and Baylor's overall statistical profile was much more positive," Cunningham said. "When we looked at it and tried to say which one was the logical choice, Baylor appeared to be the more logical choice."

A lot of people have talked about why SMU was snubbed by the BIG XII or whatever they are calling themselves these days. Thad made a good point about SMU beating Texas and the hatred shared by both schools. It is pretty simple when you consider this. SMU will always be snubbed by conferences that have any ties to the SWC.

"Prior to his conference work, Beebe was a Director of Enforcement at the NCAA. He started at the NCAA in 1982 as an enforcement representative and was involved with numerous high-profile cases. That tenure was interrupted by a one-year stint as an Assistant Director of Athletics at Wichita State University in 1986 before he returned to the NCAA office where he earned his Director of Enforcement promotion in 1988." Keep the competition down by doing whatever it takes.

Look there is no doubt that Baylor was the best alternative and strongest program AT THE TIME the Big 12 was created based on facilities, size and performance. Its sour grapes by the other schools because they hadn't prepared for what they should have seen coming. Now if the Big 12 was created in 1977, 1981 or 2000 then UH, SMU and TCU might have been the CORRECT ANSWER. What is really sad is that all the schools sat on their [deleted] and were content to ride the coattails of the Big Schools for too long. None of these schools except Baylor(BB Arena) had done a thing to improve their facilities in multiple decades

Very fair post with one exception, Baylor actually had done quite a lot facilities wise:
-BU spent 8mil on renovations to the football stadium in the late 80s
-Lettermen's lounge added in the 70s
-1991 added the Casey Athletic Center including offices, locker rooms, weight rooms, training rooms, and meeting rooms.
-1990 facelifted lights, concessions, and restrooms. Seating had been upgraded in 81.
-and as you mentioned BU spent 12 million to build the Ferrell Center for hoops and volleyball.


As for the different years affecting the outcomes:
77- Who knows
81- SMU probably wins
2000- BU was down but TCU and SMU would still be behind on facilities and attendance so BU probably still is in.

Very fair post overall and for the record your stadium is pretty freakin sweet.

Let’s take a trip down the paisley corridors of time and remember exactly where we were prior to Ron Meyer.

Dave Smith’s program did get us on probation for cheating. He wasn’t squeaky clean.

Smith left the stable bare. We had two people that could run when Meyer took over, Ricky Wesson and Arthur Whittington.

We were slow, undersized and had a weak recruiting class that included 10 Smith recruits. Meyer and his staff didn’t have the time or experience to recruit well in the fall of 1975 when he took over.

Had we continued with Smith, his poor recruiting and don’t nothing, then we would have started the crummy post DP years in the mid 70s. We would have been the TCU of the SWC by 1980. TCU was a doormat extraordinaire back then.

I think it accellerated an already coming doom. The fact is with TV negotiations you need more than 8% of the nation's tv sets and thats all the state of Texas has. So unless we raided the B8 and/or the WAC we'd probably have no SWC.
