I'm just curios as to why so many of you assume that Ramon would be a great fit for this staff? It's true that four of his six years at SMU we ran the same offense. It's also true that he was the offensive coordinator at UNT. But I assume people mention his name on the recruiting board for his recruiting skills. I don't recall him tearing up the recruiting trail at UNT. Further, if I recall correctly, Ramon didn't even like hosting recruits when he played at SMU.

Finally, giving his past coaching experience, he would either have to replace Morrison or Reinbold and we all know that those two are untouchable in June's eyes. Personally, I like Ramon but I don't think he's the right guy to come in and replicate what AK has done.

Does anyone tear up the recruiting trail at NTSU?

I definitely would hope so, but remember the run that UNT initially had under Dickey after he left SMU. They were winning conference championships and going to bowl games. They had more to sell then than they do now and Ramon was not killing it on local recruiting. That's why I question the constant mention of his name as a potential rock star recruiter on this board. Like I said, I like Ramon and do not want this to come across as though I'm bashing him. I just don't think he's the right person.

Though it would be funny to have him driving up to recruits' homes in that 1992 red BMW with the old SMU vanity plate to recruit potential players. Then during the season he could pick fights with hecklers in the stands at halftime.

We had coaches who used to recruit aggressively, but those days are long gone. There was a time that the head coach, position coach, and coordinator would do a joint in-home visit with a recruit. That's the type of job I would love to see out of this staff, and if you think that doesn't make an impact on a kid and his family, you are mistaken. It makes a bigger impact than having girls sending you letters or having a university send a private jet to pick you up from your small country town.

It would make an intersting story for a major newspaper to do a story on how recruiting has changed in the internet world. I get the feeling most of these SMU Coaches are recruiting behind a desk in front of a computer by telephone then staging their camp tour around the State. Maybe some of the high school coaches can tell us. Don't these Coaches still have no make the rounds on high school campuses to see the prospects, visit with the Coaches, do in-home visits and check for undergraduates. Who knows maybe its all changed. But maybe its SMU taking the easy route. Plenty of recruiting stories about kids getting offers by telephone when the recruit didn't know SMU was even interested or 3 and 4 star Texas recruits contacting SMU first. I personally admitt I don't know-although there are significant bits of evidence that concern me

It will be interesting to see how Nebraska recruits this year after moving to the Big Ten. Noticed "big red" is # 61, eleven places behind us in scouts ratings now. Amazing really... Nebraska has No Texas recruits committed yet. Could be hurt by leaving the big twelve with its usual "Texas Base" recruiting.

They're hoping to get QB Tommy Armstrong.

He says he's down to Nebraska and Southern Miss and will decide after an official to Lincoln next month.

Armstrong is originally from Gulfport, so Southern Miss is somewhat of a home-area school for him.

Well, each of us has two options I suppose. You can reach out to SMU leadership and ask "how can I help" or you can whine on a message board. I tend to favor the former, but I realize I'm an idiot...

(and by saying "we" I meant SMU...sorry for the plural 1st person mix-up)
Cox MustangFan, good and noble thought (ask how...). Unfortunately, very naive. That's not how it works around here. What you can do to help (very indirectly I might add), is give money. Or more money. That is all that SMU wants from you. Period.

You can not buy a prospect dinner. You can't have your Dad visit recruit's Dad and convince him SMU is where Jr. needs to be. You can't pop a $100 bill in an envelope and give it to a recruit's family member. Etc., etc.

JJ does not want suggestions on how to run his team. And it is his team, make no mistake. He wants no suggestions on personnel, his coaches, recruiting, plays or schemes. And who can blame him. Again, it's his team.

Steve O does not want your input. He hopes you like what he's doing and will gladly accept your thanks but again, he's no dummy. He knows it's JJ's team as well.

Dr. Turner. Brad Cheeves. Nope. They don't want your input either. Their job is running a university. The fact that we have athletics is secondary and is not part of the mission of the school.

I cannot think of one person in an SMU leadership position that you could talk to where 1). you would have any impact whatsoever, and 2). that would care to listen to what you have to say.

Since your first option is not realistic, and most on this board realize it, I think that you will find whining on this and other boards is what you're left with. And once again, he seems to hit the nail quite often on the head as Stallion might well be on to something re: desktop recruiting at SMU.

A guy who would be a great Texas recruiter here for SMU, after a great Pro career, would be one of our present team Leaders, OT Kelvin Beachum. However, watching this guy play now, I figure he will be a Pro for a very long time and unavailable until this coaching staff has retired.

The best thing you can do is show up to games. Football, basketball, soccer, whatever.... The kids appreciate it so much and making a difference to them is the critical thing.
