NomAnor, I don't think they are saying all the coaches are not beating the bushes. From what I am reading Adrian Klemm is doing a really good job.

By give up mode do you mean just go for D1AA level recruits that we can get more easily?

You'd have to ask Carlos Zambrano that question. He made the point sometime this summer that he thought the staff had given up on the 2012 class. Given June's background and vast connections, he has the $$ to make the push on kids all over the country.

Personally, I'm irritated that we don't make a concentrated effort here. But I've maintained a signature season can change that here. And when you get kids out of Florida and California, I'm going to -- dare, I state -- suggest that they are just as a good there as the ones here. The difference is that those kids don't know about our crappy history. The Texas kids do. I think that hurts us in Texas.

IMO Texas, California and Florida pretty much mirror each other. They are big, they carry the most D1 talent and they produce the most speed. Now, the Texas kids are probably better coached at the high school level. But talent is talent and if a credible coaching staff can make harness a player's best, then the results will be seen on the field.

I hope the Texas thing gets resolved soon because you have to cherry pick Texas for what's available (i.e. Taiwan Johnson). For now, this staff has no choice but to build the class with the best players wherever they are.

I should also point out that the Big Bottle of Glue also said the coaching staff mailed in Texas too and has inferred on other posts that since Texas was lost, so was the 2012 recruiting class.

Except he doesn't pay his own way, or for the coaches to travel. That comes out of the football budget, not his pocket, and the athletic department reportedly has seen budget cuts across the board, and not just in "marketing" and the ticket office. Sports have had budget cuts, too.

Oh, good. We hadn't re-hashed this tired topic in a few days ... and not to burst your "breaking news" bubble, but it's not that edgy to suggest that players in Florida and California are "just as good" as Texas players. There are a lot of coaches around the country who will tell you that Texas might produce more players, but California and Florida players are better and more athletic.

Mitch McConnell wrote:For now, this staff has no choice but to build the class with the best players wherever they are.

Of course. That's what they have been doing all along. If you can play and interested in SMU, they don't care where you're from.

That's idiotic.

5 Texas Commitments-only offers were Rice, North Texas, Arkansas St and Louisiana Tech. I'll say it again-SMU mailed in its Texas recruiting in 2011

Futile to make the case for anything other than mailing it in, IMO.

Verbal commitments are non-binding.

The Texas portion, yes. But did SMU mail in its OVERALL recruiting for the 2012 class?

ESPN Blurb:

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/recruiti ... id=6146566

Adrian Burton CB, (Pompano Beach, Fla./Ely)
The talented all-around athlete is getting looks at safety and linebacker. Burton attended Miami's junior day and the Hurricanes are currently on top. Florida and Florida State are showing strong interest as well, but the feeling here is if Miami puts out a scholarship offer, Burton could commit early. Burton put up a 98.46 SPARQ Rating, good enough for No. 5 in the combine.

The article goes on to say:

But unfortunately, perennial powerhouses Miami, Florida, and Florida State appear to be backing off Burton due to the fact that he's not from Texas and therefore cannot play. FSU head football coach Jimbo Fisher commented that, "We were looking at getting this kid to transfer to a Texas high school for one semester so that his talent would measure up to what we're looking for. However, the kid understandably decided to remain in Florida with his family. So we're looking elsewhere for secondary help. We wish him well."

Despite the fact that Florida, Florida St and Miami are better programs than SMU that don't have to offer as many top recruits to get the same number of top commitments-lets take a look at in-state recruiting by offers

Miami 61
Florida St. 53
Florida 48
SMU 37 (Tex)

And apparently those schools aren't fighting Arkansas St, NTSU, Rice, and Louisiana Tech for 3rd tier commitments in their own state. It actually appears that they canvassed their own state, got their offers out early and are going head to head for the Top Florida talent while SMU got about 9 offers out early and has trickled a few more out casually to recruits generrally not in the Texas Top 150
