A 'stache like that is worth at least an extra 1-3 wins during the season. 'MERICA.

mrydel wrote:Yes we do. The TD in OT against TCU had Cole Loftin in for Line. 5 wide and no back in the backfield. We have not done it much, but I get the feeling we may be doing more.
The TCU game was the first time I remember seeing it this year. I agree that confidence in the o-line has something to do with when June goes to it, but I think it has as much or more to do with what he thinks of the opposing secondary.

Who plays in 5-wide usually is dependant on how the defense adjusts. do they bring in an extra db after we sub in an extra receiver or not.

I'll say this about the 5-Wide sets... I have been shocked that Jones hasn't used more of this. Even at Hawaii he rarely used it, yet this formation makes it impossible for the defense to blitz w/ out giving away that they're blitzing. Then, if they do show blitz, all you do is pick your Hot receiver and it usually goes for a huge gain.
I've got a 2007 Hawaii game on DVD where the first three plays were all 5-Wide, all three were complete for good gains. As mentioned earlier in this thread, the Hawaii Bowl had a huge play or two using this and the game-winning TD against TCU was in 5-Wide as well.
5-Wide puts so much pressure on the D and again, they simply cannot blitz w/ out showing that they are blitzing. It's a very lethal formation and you see a lot of teams use it and do so w/ great success. Look at Buffalo in the NFL... they are using this formation about 50% of the time this year and they are 4-1... should be 5-0 but the refs totally screwed them in Cincy, the Patriots use it a lot, including the 99 yard TD against Miami to Welker. I would love to see JJ use more of this... but knowing his history, I doubt he does. It also takes Line off the field which is the one negative here... but it's still a very lethal formation.
