I say there are 3 good ideas in this thread.

Rather than giving season tickholders tickets, it would be nice for season tickholders to be able to buy add'l tickets at a reduced rate.

I have always thought SMU could do a better job of being an open and inviting campus on game day. We need to be ambassadors for our team and bring our friends and neighbors. Sometimes I feel as if SMU fans come across as an exclusive club.

SMU80MSD wrote:My first post here. I have been a long time fan and letterman and have been a season ticket holder at the Cotton Bowl, Texas Stadium, Ownby and now Ford.

Through good times and bad I have observed that the majority of SMU's fan b ase is more interested in attending the game as a social event rather then as a truly passionate Mustang fan. There is nothing wrong with that...it just is what it is.

What we have done very well since Ford opened is to create the Boulevard tailgate experience that is second to none so let's play to that. People love coming to the Boulevard so lets build on that and get butts into seats when the game starts.

So here's my idea:

Why can't we combine with the Mustang Club fundraiser a program aimed at the business community in which those of us with influence in various business sectors reach out to firms and offer a game/tailgate experience for their employees?

Turn the practice field into a tailgae pavillion in which each company has it's own area, food/beverage/entertainment provided. A main tent with TV's showing other games, etc.

This is a way that the business community, regardless of school afiliation can support SMU by giving their employees a fun family outing. Over time individuals will come back because they've enjoyed the experience.

There is no reason we can't target 5000 people a game if we work it.

The business relationships we have locally are second to none among our alumni and it is quite easy to have 100 or more individuals from a company when families are included. Think about spending $25 a head to entertain your own employees for 5 hours of fun. This could catch on and build support for SMU as Dallas's team and we don't even need marketing dollars to accomplish it.

Larger firms could host a couple of hundred of their employees/families at each game throughout the season if it catches on.

Mustang Club Board members let's quit listening to excuses and begin to take action now for 2012!

Thoughts from others?

not bad at all. I'm sure there would have to be pretty strict standards, but this could really help us tie in Dallas.

The Bouldevard is great but can house only so many people. The campus is changing so quickly with the Bush Library and sitting on the Mrs Baird's land.

Let's get "leadership" to create a masterplan of how to expand the Boulevard into other areas surrounding the stadium and begin the process of working through legal issues tied to alcohol consumption, etc.

SMU has unlimited potential if we attack the attendence issue with a different way of looking at the issue. Long term if we raise "donation" reach beyond our alumni base by offeing a unique product in return...a great footbal prodcut, fantastic stadium and a social element beyond the actual game we can spread red and blue across Dallas County and beat the Frogs at their own game of converting their town.

All it takes is organization and hard work.

Here is the campus master plan for anyone interested. Plenty of room to expand. And the grass area incircled by the new resident halls being built provides more land near the stadium if we are able to grow that large. Also if things ever got that big we can use the half circle that goes in front of Shuttles, and the law quad. Plenty of room to expand.

They key is to get casual fans to feel welcomed and a part of the experience,

To me, the expansion area should be in front of Moody and along Doak Plaza. There should be vendors with the "Taste of Dallas" idea I saw earlier selling beer and good food. Fletcher's corn dog stand? It would be easy to find for those visitors who don't have a space on the Vard. Bring in wine specials or special beer tastings. The Ticket radio should do an hour preview show here with Ticket chicks and SMU free ticket giveways/prizes.

Is there still a SMU shuttle from the DART lot, my friend said they didn't see it when I told them to park there. Park and ride ticket specials maybe.

Not sure if the shuttle runs for games, but the walk is short from the station. If you were walking at Jerry World it would take you longer to get from parking to the stadium

We have the nucleus for a "unattached visitor" area already by the flagpole. I've seen vedors of all types there. Problem is, there is no signage or maps, and there is no general sitting area.

We need signs/maps around the blvd to direct people and we need a huge tent with open seating/TVs/food to buy with CLEAR SIGNAGE that it's open to anyone. We really aren't that far off.

Maybe even some small open coolers for people to stash their beer.

They explored creating a blvd at Doak walker plaza a few years ago when June was hired and it was widely panned.

Makes sense. The closer to the stadium the better!

For visitors why don't we create parking on part of the Mrs. Baird's plant area. I believe it is in Dallas so alcohol is not as big an issue as in UP. We don't need to spoon feed visitors but publicize that this is a "traditional" tailgate area where people pull up, open up the back of the Suburban and get after it.

The school could charge a few bucks for parking there. It helps solve parking, allows for more traditional tailgating and can be a meeting point for visiting team fans.

They're very close to doing major construction there. They are relocating the tennis courts to this location.
